I thought we should have a thread about the blizzard coming to the northeast so that anyone affected could have a place to report about it. Of course when the power and/or cable goes out, you won't be reporting...but before and after that we can hear what's going on in your area and your life.

Right now in my part of Connecticut the forecast is for 12" to 18". That is a little more than in New York City but significantly less than the 18" to 24" predicted for Boston. Of course what we actually get is anyone's guess. People in the news media have been comparing this to the blizzard of 1978 which really hit Connecticut hard. I remember that blizzard. The snow was to my waist and the Governor closed evrything down! It was truly memorable. I had just gotten married and moved into a condominium with my new husband. I had never seen anything like it although I had lived my entire life in Connecticut!

I find it really, really hard to believe that this storm will come close to what that one was!

Stay warm and safe, Deb, and all my friends in the frozen north!!!

If you go to wcvb.com/weather, you can enter your zip code into a search bar and track the forecast hour-by-hour for your area.

They're predicting 23" of snow in my area by 10:00 p.m. Friday night.

Yikes, I hope you and all the NE PS'ers are safe. Sending prayers/good thoughts for everyones safety! keep us posted!

We're supposed to get 16-24" in my area, but I couldn't narrow it down further. Doesn't matter though, it's all the same -- a WHOLE LOTTA SNOW.

There are over 600 closings listed for tomorrow but my school district isn't one of them yet. I'm guessing we may go in and just be released early.

Here in NYC, the bulk of the snow isn't supposed to fall until tomorrow night around 9:00pm (*i think*). I still brought my work laptop home just in case! Hope everyone stays safe - especially the folks in Boston and CT who are likely to be hit hard!

Here in Rhode Island, they are predicting blizzard conditions with 18 to 24 inches of snow and a high probability of loss of power.

Except for losing power, I think it sounds like fun. I was in Europe for the '78 one but in Conn. in '92, the one The Perfect Storm was written about. Grew up near Rochester NY where this sort of thing was common -- we snowshoed into the village on silent streets. Stay safe, but enjoy!

This is how my dh feels about this (he says I am squashing down his enjoyment factor here :knockout: ) but I feel quite the opposite. After Sandy I am all stormed out and very anxious about this approaching storm. In NYC I think they are predicting over a foot of snow but very high winds and even more worrisome is at the Jersey shore (and all those on LI and other places that were hard hit during Sandy). The winds and flooding potential at the shore are high and I am stressed. No wonder my hair is falling out!! I just might be starting a thread in a few weeks on how to find a good wig lol. JK,...I hope. :?

To all those affected by this upcoming storm Please stay safe and check in here when you have a chance/get power restored.

The snow started later than it was expected to here, not until about 7:00 AM. So far it's been pure snow, however, no changing to rain as predicted. I don't know if the prediction for this area still calls for a change to freezing rain before a change back to snow tonight. The change to freezng rain-or lack of change to it-will affect the total snow accumulation. I don't think the trees and wires will care if they're hit by snow or freezing rain, though. They'll come down under either! My father took my Jeep out earlier this morning and said the roads are icy and that "they" were right to close the schools. (Usually everyone condemns the Superintendent of Schools for closing schools before a need to close them is actually demonstrated!)

Be safe everyone!

Oh no! You guys keep getting the worst of things! Will Mother Nature ever leave you alone!

I hope everyone stays safe and warm during the freak storm!! Will have you guys in my thoughts!

So I guess this is two storms, one coming from the north and one from the south. It's snowing now, only lightly, but the real snow won't come until late afternoon I think. That's the one that will pack a punch.

My husband doesn't pay too much attention to the forecast. He just figures he'll deal with the weather as it comes and there's no need to prepare ahead of time. Guess who lost his gloves and is all "eh, no need to worry" about it? He won't be saying that when he helps me dig out my car, will he? Seriously, who doesn't get a pair of gloves when he knows possibly two feet of snow is going to hit?!

Not happy being at work right now. I think some of my co-workers took off. There was less traffic than usual on the highway. Long gas lines again :=). (Times like these I'm happy to have a Prius! - a little less than half tank and I'm good for another 200 miles!)

I DID make sure that I turned my fridge and freezer up to high so that it's extra cool just in case we lose power. It's times like these that I'm happy to have a gas stove, live in an apartment building, and live close to a hospital and county courts. I got power back during Sandy a good 4 days before my parents did.

Le sigh... waiting on a wedding band to arrive from e-weddingbands.com - a few more days? That would have made this more tolerable! :saint:

Stay warm everyone!

They are saying 3-6 inches here, who knows. Stay safe everyone!!

Thanks for starting this Deb, hope you don't lose power..

Deb - I LOVE these threads! I was so happy to see you had started one!!!

I went to three grocery stores yesterday. So insane. I still don't think we have enough milk, but what can you do? Two were lunch break trips, and then I went again at 8 last night, which is when the lines were really bad! I gave up on getting gas last night because of the lines, but was able to fuel up this morning (no lines at all!) I was out because I had a dr's appointment, and got home at noon. I must report that I adore my volvo xc70. The roads were definitely slippery, and I cruised right on up some hills, that I would have had much trouble with in my old saab!!

Before I left, I asked my husband to make leek soup! Haha, and he did! (He's a very fast cook!) Really hit the spot and even my 2 year old liked it! (They sell frozen leeks at Trader Joe's now. Highly recommend! Yes, I know I am rambling!!)

I am so excited about the snow. I took some pictures. I was going to post them right away, but it apparently takes me about 2 hours to do so! It looks really dark, but it's not really dark at all. Maybe I need to use the flash next time! :rodent:

Here in Massachusetts, the Governor ordered all vehicles off of the road after 4pm! Forecast says 18"-24" in my area! Luckily, we have a stocked fridge (bar too!), kids have no school, and my husband works from home. So we are home safe! Right now, I am snuggling with my 3year old and a sleeping 6 month old on the couch watching the Bee Movie! Stay safe everyone!

uh oh, it's starting to really come down hard. We went out about half an hour ago to pick up some essentials (milk for my dh and popcorn for me :cheeky: ) and it was just hailing hitting our faces but now it looks like the wind is fast and furious and the snow is falling. Fingers crossed it doesn't do any damage and that everyone stays safe.

Thanks for the kind words, Kaleigh and Loves Vintage. I get the need to share my weather experience with friends when I am facing a hurricane or a blizzard. I guess it's like the "Hurricane Parties" people sometimes have in parts of the south (at least proverbially) so that they aren't alone. I love these threads, too. As with the political debate threads (but without the risk of argument) I really feel a sense of community in these threads. I love watching how everyone interacts and cares about each other!

Hugs all around,
Deb

Nothing here yet.

I hate to hit send because once I do..... That's when the power goes out and all the craziness starts...

Deb yes, a very very special community. ::)

Hugs to all the PS'ers in this storm's path...

If ya don't hear from me, a tree fell and am frozen like an ice cube... :cheeky:

So far, we're at about 4 inches on the ground and the worst is due to roll through between midnight and tomorrow morning.

I'm in the 18-24" (and possibly up to 30) band. Hunkered down already with hub and pets, snugly at home in sweats. Devices are all fully powered so hopefully i can get on even if we lose power - lol.

I'm in Eastern Ontario and we have had about 15cm so far (the reports vary depending on who tells the story --- WAIT! It must be Kenny's news Station I'm listening to!!!   ) and at least another 5cm + , still to come. Should end here around midnight but who knows...

Snow Storm Pet Peeve #1 - IDIOTS on the road who think because the sign is posted "100km/hr", they need to DRIVE 100km/hr, regardless of the road conditions!! BUDDY ---in the truck-- HELLLLOOOOOO!!!! ... slow the heck down --- "arrive alive", as the saying goes....

Snow Storm Pet Peeve #2 - everybody in line at the liquor store ahead of me, stocking up to prevent any sudden wine rationing from taking place - yanno, cuz it *could* happen - and there's a 17 year old kid who thinks that due to the rush on a Friday night, he won't get carded... REALLY??? Kudo's to the LCBO for carding him and not allowing a purchase - good job, liquor store staffers!

Metro NJ/NY--so far we've had at least 5 iches. I went out and cleaned off the cars and shovelled the walkways and the sidewalk. Mr. St. Clare is in the midst of a VERY BAD flu...he's been flat on his back since Monday night except for one visit to the doctor. I know he's really sick because: he went to the doctor, he's actually taking medicine, he's actually staying in bed and he asked me to make him tea.In 30 years I've NEVER seen him drink tea. Our friend's dad died and the wake was last night. He didn't even consider going. I went to represent the family. He's really been hit hard.

Anyway, getting back to the weather. It's coming down hard and wet. The wind is picking up and it's going to snow for the next 12 hours before it blows out to sea. I plan on shoveling one more time before I go to bed and hiding the shovel so Mr. St. Clare doesn't get any funny ideas. I hit the supermaket yesterday and picked up the essentials--donuts and potato chips.

I hope everyone stays warm and safe.

Stay safe and warm all of you in the path of the storm.

The storm didn't do what was predicted, so now I, also, am in an 18" to 24" area. Apparently the immediate environs of Boston, however, are expected to get 2 to 3 feet!

What I dread is the (seemingly inevitable) time when my cable connection goes and I lose the Internet. We have a generator, so I don't usually lose power now. I hate to lose the Internet, though! The heavy winds are due tonight, so I may be out at any moment.

It was raining but turning into slush on the sidewalk as I walked to whole foods this afternoon. I called before I went to make sure they were still doing delivery. I shopped for most everything, and while I was on line for a cashier the rain turned to snow (2 pm). On the way home I stopped at the wine shop and the butcher. All my groceries have been delivered and I made a huge beef stew. I took the dog out a few minutes ago with his red rubber boots on and the snow was barely falling. there is an inch of slush on the sidewalk. Snow in the heart of the city is rarely pretty.

It's almost 5:00 AM on Saturday here in southwestern Connecticut. So far we have power and a cable connection, although I really think we could still lose the latter due to upcoming high winds that are predicted. Not much more snow is due here, although areas north of here, like Boston and Maine, will get snow for several more hours. I don't know, yet, how much we have. I do know that Hamden, Connecticut, which is one hour north of here, has 34". And since the snow is still falling, will be getting more.

I have good friends who live in Hamden. In fact I am due to go to a children's birthday part there next Saturday! The mom grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts, though, which is in the snow belt, so i think she is probably used to snows like this one. I have been thinking that the kids (ages 1 and 4) will probaby really enjoy the high snow!

I hope everyone had a safe, warm night!

Good Morning Deb, I am happy to report that we have power too! High winds? I better get the tv on to review the never-ending coverage on this event. I haven't measured anything yet, but am anxious to take pictures. I will also report that my dogs are not yet thrilled. The beagle mix is a bit un-phased by it all, even though I thought I lost her. I dug out a very small area just outside the door, and hoped that would be enough for a quick let out. She decided to jump in the snow and was completely covered. For a brief moment, my mind raced, how will I get her out fast, and then she emerged, and then she sunk, and emerged again, creating a nice little path all the way. I will say, for a girl from Georgia, she LOVES the snow. The greyhound, however, is really not impressed! They will both be racing around later today, and I completely look forward to that!

I bet your dog will be thrilled! Has he been out yet?

Good morning Deb and LV and anyone else who is awake. :wavey: Glad you guys have power!!
I think it snowed only about 6-8 inches here or so (at least that is what the doorman told me) and it looks so pretty right now :sun: ! By later today though it will probably be a dirty mess. :knockout:

Hope everyone is waking up nice and warm and comfy with power and internet!!

I tried getting some decent pics out of our snow encrusted windows. Let's see if they came out OK.
