Hello. I, recently, got a RB diamond appraised and the appraiser noticed a small black mark on the girdle. She says it's either a marker or a pen mark and that it can be cleaned off by a jeweler. She mentioned something about "acid"??? Does anybody know if it's possible? I'm still a little concerned... thanks for any input.

P.s. I'd like to add, according to her, that this mark may have caused her to err in the color grading. My diamond is a D, she rated it an E/F.

I had a melee stone that turned black, sent it back to the jeweler who put it in an acid bath. It cleaned up right away.

Which lab graded your diamond. A mark that can removed shouldn't cause the color to be graded differently by the appraiser. I would have a jeweler clean it up and have her take another look at it.

GIA graded the diamond.

Was the evaluation done by an independent appraiser? They don''t usually give a split grade, such as an E/F on a single stone. GIA shouldn''t be off by almost two grades, although it''s possible.

Yes it was done by an independent appraiser. She didn't give it a split grade, she actually gave it an F but was leaning towards an E. Besides the black spot, she also attributed it to the smaller size of her GIA stones (I don't know the term) that she put my stone against. Hers were ~.75 ct and mine is 1.18 ct.

I had my diamond appraised by Rockdoc.. and he had put a black mark on the diamond to mark where the laser inscription was so that it wasn''t blocked when setting the stone. Was this the case with your diamond? Perhaps it was over the laser inscription...
