I am mostly posting this as a PSA. I had a tourmaline to return to a vendor in Bangkok. I have not returned a stone before internationally. I checked the rates on FedEex online so I knew what to ask for--looked like the pak and international economy was the best way to go. I got a $47 price. I showed up to the FedEx store because I thought I would need to get customs forms like at the Post Office (where I have shipped things internationally). The FedEx cashier rang in the post code I had for Bangkok and he said it would be $178 !!!!!!! (!!!!!!!!!). I told him I had checked online and it was $47 for international economy. He told me I must have done something wrong, or did not put in the right dimensions (it was a pak--they know the dimensions, there is no option to choose, and it weighed less than a pound obviously) so he told me to bring it up on my phone. I did. $47 as I said. He said he could not recreate that price, or any price lower than $178 and I would have to create the label and pay for it online, then e-mail it to him. So I stood in the store and did this, to the shock of the employees. They warned me there could be a scam website. They printed the labels I sent and no problem, I got a receipt. This was incredibly bizarre! Next time (hopefully there will not be too many next times) I know to just make the whole label myself and pay for it online. Just passing on this strange experience. I don't know if this FedEx store was just incredibly incompetent or if this is a common occurrence.
