does anyone have very much if any of this material from the utah mine-i understand there is some showing on the markets-some as rough or else in facited but small gems-any info appreciated....

Richard M. at ArtCutGems - www.artcutgems.com has some for sale.

Not sure if it''s up on the website yet - it was mentioned in his email that went out to existing customers last week.

I''ve heard it''s very nice - and since all my stones from him have been topnotch, it would be worth talking to him if you are in the market for some.

From my own point of view, it''s not on my radar at the moment... aka I still have lots of gaps in my garnet collection and must not get sidetracked!

thanks 4 the info-will ck im out from time 2 time-thanks....

Duh, have just realised I was thinking about Benitoite not Bixbite... brain not functioning today!

Sorry!

Might still be worth asking Richard though...

Bixbite is so rare, I think it's more rare than benitoite. It's very difficult to find clean pieces, and eveything is so small. FYI for PS'ers not in the know, but Bixbite is a type of chromium rich red beryl that is only found in Utah. Like emerald, it's cousin, it's typically very included. I have a teeny mineral sample of it, that's my claim to fame!

I''ve asked my dealer. I''ll keep you posted.

Multicolour.com had some about 6 months ago and I think have a few small pieces still available. They''re highly included however and I believe all the 1ct pieces were sold fairly quickly.

thanks for ur info-am looking 4 the needle-in-the-haystack as they call it-eventually wil find it-thanks 2 all who answered....

There is another pink red beryl from Africa called PEZZOTTAITE. It looks similar to bixbite, but it is more pink. Make sure you're not getting pezzottaite, and you're indeed getting bixbite. Some unscrupulous dealers will pass pelozzaite off as bixbite. It is also a very rare mineral, and a nice collector gem, just make sure you know what you are getting. I believe pezzottaite is colored by cessium instead of chromium.

Here's a selection of bixbites for sale. I think people have purchased from this dealer before, but I do not recall.

Steve,
My dealer doesn''t have any. You could give Pala a try.

With due respect, this may come across as rather condescending. I know that''s not your intention and I personally appreciate your sharing your knowledge.

I''ll wager that if someone wanted to know, they''d have asked. No offence intended.

As a lurker reading this thread, I thought it was really helpful for TL to share that info - I had no idea what bixbite was. Though the thread wasn''t about something I''m searching for, this site is about education - and I think TL was helping to do just that. JMO.

Btw, bixbite is a pretty stone! Good luck in your search, m76steve! Are you looking to set it or adding to a collection?

To be clear -- I did acknowledge that TL was sharing her knowledge and that I, for one, appreciated it. If it''s not apparent from my above post, I''m not jonesing for a bickering session.
