Hello. Is it a difficult job to upgrading to a larger diamond in a setting that was originally set with a smaller diamond? Let's say, for a basket setting. If you went from maybe a 3/4 carat princess (about 5.25 mm) to a 1 1/4 carat (close to 6 mm). Would it be really simple, something any jeweler could easily do? Or is it something that might not be possible?

Thanks!

*edit - Just noticed that my title is not clear at all. And I can't edit it. Sorry.

Depends on the setting.

You would need to ask the jeweller in question and show them the setting, it might be possible but you really need an expert to advise you here ling.

It''s a classical tapered baguette setting. But the baguettes sit fairly close next to the center stone. For now, it''s a non-issue. But I''d be more comfortable if I knew that the option was there to upgrade, if I so choose. Especially considering that I don''t currently have the necessary funds for the diamond size I want, but the diamond store does have an upgrade policy.

Only reason I''m asking here instead of my jeweler is because I''m kind of scared to bother them again. I think they are pretty annoyed by me because I''m constantly asking them and inquiring about a million random things. Not to mention they ignored my last question when I was trying to ask about the alloys used in their white gold. lol

Sometimes I wish I went with a ps online vendor since I have a feeling they are much more responsive and comfortable with the million questions and e-mails. Oh, well.

The thing is consumers can't really advise in any meaningful way as it is beyond our expertise, plus a jeweller would need to see the setting to tell you what could be done. For example they might be able to reuse the same head and prongs or it might need a new one - but if your jeweller makes you feel uncomfortable though Ling, see if you can find a sales person you like if you are tied with them should you upgrade. They should be welcoming your business, not making you feel uncomfortable!

Big ditto!!

I have a three-stone. My centre is in a 6-prong very similar to the vatche royal crown, the sidestones are in baskets tucked in very closely. For my particular setting, I can''t upgrade or downgrade in size at all. It really does depend on the head, and how the head fits with your sidestones - a plain peg head on a plain band might be a non-issue to replace, for example, while a fully integrated basket might be more restrictive.

Thanks for the info. There''s a big chance that we won''t upgrade it at all anyways. It''s just that I keep thinking about how nice it would be to have an even 1 ct stone. Oh, well. I shouldn''t be so obsessed over these things. I blame PriceScope for making me strive for bigger and better. haha

Anywho, even though I do feel awkward dealing with them, they do have pretty good customer service. Just not via e-mail. And their after purchase service is pretty top notch. After I get my ring, I''ll probably only have to deal with them once or twice a year to get the ring polished, prongs checked, etc. So no worries.
