Bezeled stones falling out

I special ordered a diamond and amethyst bezel set eternity band from IDJ about a year and a half ago and since then have lost 3 amethysts. The first time I lost a stone, Yekutiel replaced it for free. The second time he charged me the price of the stone and the shipping to return it to me. As a result, I haven't been wearing the band very often, for fear of losing yet another stone, and wouldn't you know, I wore it today and about 1/2 way through the day realized that another amethyst had fallen out. ;( I'm so upset, because I was under the impression that bezel set stones are more secure, and also because I don't really feel like sending it back again if it's just going to keep happening. But then again, I don't really want it sitting in my jewelry box unworn. None of my other bezel set stones have ever fallen out.

Thoughts? Should I send it back again? And if so, should I ask for some type of guarantee? Yekutiel told me last time that he checked the integrity of the rest of the stones/bezels before returning it to me. I just don't know what to do.

That's strange and frustrating, Lil Misfit. I have the topaz/diamond bezel eternity, a couple years now. So far, so good. Maybe some one else will come along who's had experience with this. It's a shame to just let it sit in a box. :(

That's so frustrating!! What metal is the ring made out of?

Hi Lil Misfit
I'm sorry to have read another amethyst stone fell out. It is really odd being it's a bezel setting and stones shouldn't be falling out. The only explanation I could say it's an eternity band made with diamonds and Amethyst stones and Amethyst are semi precious stones and they are much softer than diamonds and other precious stones perhaps they got damaged or may even broke and fell out of the band. In any event you have an eternity band that you need to wear it with joy and happiness. Please get in touch with me and I will take care of it.

This is why I love doing business with you! :appl:

I just got the ring back from Yekutiel about 2 weeks ago and have worn the ring a total of 3-4 times since then. I inspect it each morning I decide to wear it, to make sure all the stones are still there, and wouldn't you know it, about an hour ago I just noticed that yet a 4th amethyst is missing. ;( I appreciate the fact that Yekutiel fixed it without charging me last time, but every time I send it to him it costs me over $30 in shipping and insurance. This is so very frustrating, so I guess my only option is to put it back in my jewelry box for good. I have done nothing with my hands this morning except type on my keyboard. I am not banging the band to break the stones. They are falling out, potentially when I wash my hands...??? I purposely do not wear it every day and especially when I know I will be doing something that could cause potential damage (like lifting weights). It's just so disappointing that I can't even enjoy the ring on a rare occurence. :(

I suggest marking the ring so that you know if it's always the same bezel that stones fall out from. If it is, then seal that hole with whatever metal your ring is. I've seen some doing this as a sizing option. This means shipping the ring to IDJ 2 more times. But at least you can wear it afterwards.

Alternatively, if the falling out is due to gem breaking because of softness, replace it with a diamond. If they keep falling out and you keep replacing with diamonds, soon you will have a more wearable diamond band. But the repair might be costly.

It's impossible to mark the ring to see if it's the same stone falling out. I do, however, know for a fact that this is a different stone from the last 3 because it's the only one with a solid back. The others are hollow.

And I already own a full diamond band. That's what I wear most days. The bands are identical except that one is all diamonds and the other is diamonds and amethysts.

Here's the diamond band:

At the advice of Gypsy and Karl I have emailed Yekutiel directly to see if anything can be done. I'm wondering, at this point, if the whole band needs to be redone....but I don't know....

So you are saying the stones are falling out of the front of the bezels? If so, that just isn't right. Sounds like the bezels are not adequate or the stones are too small for the bezels. Honestly, at this point I would just return the ring.

Yes, DS, they are falling out of the front of the bezel. I sent Yekutiel a pretty lengthy email and the response I got was this: "What would you like me to do?" Honestly, I'm not sure. What do you guys think? Do you think the ring could be re-made with stronger bezel fronts (lips over the stones)? If not, then what?

Oh that is hard. Does it have to be ammys? Could you request purple sapphires or something else instead? Honestly I would just request a replacement for a whole new ring. I'm hoping there is just a fluke with this one. If the other one has issues either ask for a refund or get another stone put in. Sorry I'm not more help. I'm just surprised they are falling out...i really think it might be an error with this specific setting.

At this point, I would return the ring and get a refund. I think it is a workmanship issue and no matter what you replace the amethysts with, there is the risk of the stones falling out again.

I had some stones fall out of bezels before. They were semi-precious stones which fell out of sterling silver bezels. One was in a pendant. The bezels looked nicely made and the stones didn't look too small. One was a turquoise stone that fell out of a nice sterling bracelet. Luckily, I heard it fall on the pavement and I glued it back in. The bezel looked perfect also and it appeared to grip the stone properly.

I can't figure out the physics of it. I used to trust bezels hands down over prongs, but I don't anymore after those occurrences years ago.

Beat me with a wet noodle, but I apply under magnification the tiniest bead of super glue to a tiny crevice in the bezel in all my bezeled pieces which contain mainly cabochon semi-precious stones. I've had no problems ever since with stones falling out.

Yes, I think the advice to return the ring is good.

Thanks for the replies. Yekutiel actually called me this morning and we brainstormed some ideas. In the end, we decided that I'm going to send the ring back to him and he's going to add some tiny prongs to each of the amethysts to keep them inside the bezel. Hopefully that will solve the problem. Fingers crossed!

Lil M this sounds like a huge drag.
Great of Y to keep repairing, but it does seem like something is off and he is not seeing it.
If it were me I would rather a full re-make than the addition of tiny prongs. I hope this works out for you.

This just happened to me about three weeks ago. I have a Bev K ruby and diamond bezel set band and a diamond popped out of one bezel. I guess even bezel set stones are not immune.
In my case, I had the ring in my ultrasonic and I should have known better but I thought it wouldn't happen to bezel set stones.

Anyway, I hope your ring gets fixed.

Now I am trying to figure out who to use to ship my ring back to Bev. K.

OMG I'm another one who thought bezels were immune to most everything so I'm learning alot. When it comes to cleaning jewelry though, I've never been comfortable w/ the idea of ultrasonics (even though I know plenty of people who love them & have had no problems).
