Hello,

So I've closed in on the ring I plan to get (Niessing Open End in gray gold) and I'm considering buying a champagne diamond for it. Does anyone have any recommendations as to where to look online for them? If I were buying a colorless diamond, I'd go to WF, JA, NI, BN...but none of them seem to carry colored diamonds! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

edit: Haha, in the title, make that LOOSE diamonds, not LOSE (no tension setting jokes, please

www.highperformancediamonds.com sometimes have lower colour Infinity of top cut quality if that would work for you. I assume it is a round diamond you want? If so, see what Wink can come up with. Apparently true champagnes have brownish tones but a beautiful top cut of lower colour might be suitable, Wink could advise further as to the colour and personality of the stone.

What size are you looking at?

Somewhere around .35-.45ct.

Thanks. I was thinking about something between the C4-C7 shade. Nevertheless, these suckers are nearly impossible to find online.

Thanks Hest88 and Stone-Cold11. Unfortunately, neither of those sites have even one champagne or orange diamond between .35 and .45ct, IF-VS2. I''d also like an ideal cut if possible. I suppose I could have the jeweler I''m working with find the stone but it''s hard for me to believe finding fancy and colored diamonds is so difficult.

It will be hard finding a fancy color stone with cut grade as usually fancy colors stones are cut to maximize color and not performance. A bright stone will usually has a lighter color, decreasing it''s value.

Don''t try to look for an ideal cut because they''re few and far between in coloured diamonds.

Concentrate on finding the colour you want. "Champagne" is a really broad term. You can get pale brown with hints of grey, pale browns with hints of orange, light browns, mediums etc etc - you get the idea.

The ONE thing I would stress is that you MUST see the diamond alongside the metal you''ve chosen because some "champagne" diamonds look diabolical with white gold or platinum. They look so cold that they lose their warmth. I''m a fan of white gold but have had to set some of mine in yellow gold because of this. Mind you, yellow gold doesn''t suit all champagne diamonds. I have one that just disappears into the setting because the tone is too similar. Hence you MUST see them together before commiting. If you search on my name, I think I''ve posted some of my brown/champagne diamonds before so you can get an idea of different tones/metals.

Thanks for the response. Wouldn''t an ideal cut diamond still have the same benefit with colored stones as it does with colorless? Also, I''m unable to even find colored stones that are within my carat/clarity criteria to even be able to narrow down the color I''m looking for.

I think diamonds by lauren carries champagn colored diamonds.... Maybe they have some that would fit your requirements (though ideal cut probably shouldn''t be your top priority unless you have a looooong time to look).

I second Lovingdiamonds heads up re checking the diamond you like against the metal you like. I have a white gold cross with chamapgne diamonds that my in-laws gave me. I like the combo, but others I have seen really only look good in yellow gold, or sometimes rose gold. There are so many variables in color and undertones in the stones that you really have to check the stone and the metal against each other IMO.

In the store they had a brown diamond similar in color to your example that we saw up against the gray gold. We liked the look, but I can understand how some could consider it to be somewhat cold. I like the brown, but maybe if it had some red tones, as well, that would look nice.

She actually has red/auburn hair, so it would be an interesting look. However, do you think that would be a bad thing for the stone to be so close in color to her hair?

Thanks everyone for the help so far!

As David has said, coloured diamonds are very rarely ideal cut because the lapidarists cut to emphasize colour. In some ways, white diamonds and coloured diamonds are completely different animals.

In all honesty you can pick up champagne/brown/cognac diamonds VERY cheaply. Some will be natural, some irradiated. If you''re not bothered about which you buy, you should look on Ebay or, strangely, with the TV jewellery shopping channels (who have light brown diamonds set in very inexpensive settings and you could take them out and re-set).

I''m actually only interested in naturally colored stones, so ebay and TV shopping probably wouldn''t work.

I''m also a bit confused on what "cut for color" means. Would symmetry on a colored stone be a bad thing? Without being educated on the matter, it would seem you would want light to interact with the stone the same, no matter what color it is.

I''ve never seen gray gold before and it sounds really interesting. Do you have a link to your setting please? I''d love to see.

I have auburn hair too and I personally would love a diamond with copper tones, that would really suit my skin (another one for the wishlist!

LovingDiamonds suggested Diamonds by Lauren and I''d have to agree, since I''ve been really happy with the things I''ve got from there. Have you had a look here at all? http://rockdiamond.com/index.php/categories/natural-brown-diamonds/page-1/ 4 pages of stones set and loose that have brown tones.

When I was looking for a pendant stone last year, DBL found one for me that wasn''t listed on the site - I emailed David with the specs I was looking for. Might be worth a try?

Good luck with your search, hope you find your perfect stone.

Thanks for the advice. It's good to know someone else out there with auburn hair likes the idea of copper tones on their jewelry. She has some pink to her skin, but we found rose gold tended to blend a little too much.

Anyways, the ring is here (only the stone will be much smaller to account for her size 3-3/4 fingers).

I'm not opposed to colorless diamonds but I like the uniqueness of colored stones. Were I not interested in a tension setting, I would be looking at sapphires, too.

I'll take a look at Diamonds by Lauren. Looks to be the most solid option I've come across yet.

Wow oh wow, it''s gorgeous! I love the sleek simplicity of it. That will be stunning with a coloured diamond.

Ghumbs - do a bit of reading on coloured diamonds because most brown toned diamonds are natural. Including the ones on Ebay. For example, this is a certified natural brown diamond of exactly 1ct. I bought this for $749. Brown toned diamonds are VERY cheap normally. This is probably more brown than you want though.

This is more of a champagne colour and is a .63ct oval - again certified and natural. I bought this for $300.

By the way - your setting is STUNNING!

Thanks for the examples, LovingDiamonds. Perhaps champagne wasn''t the proper term, as I''m looking for something that''s brown with some red/orange to it. That top one would probably be a closer color than the bottom one you posted. Anyway, I''m still on the search and have a couple people looking for me, already. Couldn''t hurt to have more, so if anyone out there knows any info or resources that could help, I''d appreciate it!

Then you''re definitely looking for a brown diamond and not champagne (which tends to be lighter). You''ll see some people also call these chocolate diamonds if it helps in your search. Unfortunately the lovely deep brown with orange flashes are more difficult to find than the champagnes. Good luck in your search.

Edit: Have you considered the one that David posted up - it''s a lovely example of a deep brown.

Ghumbs, does that setting only work with a round? Because for my auburn colouring, and with the gray gold, this is the one I would want, but it''s a cushion:

Haha. Can you tell that this ring has really caught my attention? I am excited to see it!

Jen

I asked the jeweler and she said round only, though I''m going to second guess her and contact Niessing directly because I''d also be interested in a cushion or old mine cut.

I''ll be sure to keep this thread updated for your sake.

Also, thanks LovingDimonds for the clarification. So chocolate/cognac/brown are the terms?

Thanks!
An old mine cut or a cushion would be amazing in that setting, it would show it off beautifully.
I''m sitting here craving a coppery brown diamond now. If you phone DBL, just ask them to get two.

Ghumbs, the sites may not have them on their online database, but if they''re experts they may be able to get them. I''d contact a few of them and see what they can do for you.

I can''t wait to see this ring. Keep us posted and show pics! i think an omc or cushion would be gorgeous.

Yes, but if you owned an uncut rough diamond that would be graded Intense if cut to ideal light-performance specs and be worth $10,000 but would get a Vivid grade if cut for maximum color strength and worth $13,000 which would you do?
Would you throw away $3000 for some artistic principle?
(Actual numbers made up, and do not matter.)

The colored diamond market rewards a higher color grade much more than higher light performance.
Colored rough is cut for maximum color, not maximum light return because it is good business.

Now if you want to buy rough yourself and cut it for light performance (and throw away money) nobody will stop you and frankly if I was loaded I do the same thing since I love colored diamonds and good light performance.

There's also secondary colors within champagne or brownish diamonds, like yellow, orange, pink. Pink commands the highest prices, but are much more affordable than a pure fancy pink.

Here's my half carat pink champagne (in rose gold). You can see a little of the blue fluorescence in this sunshine shot. I bought this stone about 15 years ago, and paid around $800 if I remember correctly.
