Best and worst (non-round) shape for earring studs?

HI:

I'll be the lone dissenter and say that my Tiffany Victoria earrings are stunning. Marquis :kiss2: . I probably would not buy ovals for studs, but certainly for a drop style.

In short, nothing would be off the table for me.

cheers--Sharon

Oh the Victoria earrings are lovely! I think people commenting no for Marquis are thinking about Marquis as solitaire studs. I know that is how I took it.

You have me thinking now of how oval studs would look. I’ve seen them before, and the ones I saw looked great, but only in huge sizes. Since I’m looking for a smaller pair (def =<1ctw) I wonder if ovals would look funny.

I’ve seen quite a few people wear princess studs, they do seem to be a common second option after rounds! I guess it’s because it’s kind of similar to a round in terms of faceting and also “concentrated” instead of elongated.

Actually this makes me think: how would oval studs look?

You make a good point about keeping step cuts clean. I also have long hair and I wonder if I’m actually going to be able to keep them as clean as I like, but I also just prefer step cuts! Such a dilemma.

I do love step cuts! My original engagement ring from my husband is an emerald cut, and I love it to pieces. But, I always feel like I get it filthy the second I put it on.

In the end, you have to follow your heart. Maybe you'll embrace updos and frequent ultrasonic cleaning for the right pair of step cut studs! :)

Maybe I’ll start using tweezers to get them on and off ;) it doesn’t help that I prefer screw backs over push backs. I found a pair of cute square earrings in my lot of costume jewelry so I’ll be able to see what my ears do to squares.

I do have a friend with small step cut studs that she never wears. I’ve actually only seen her wear them once. I might ask her if she would let me try them on… or buy them off her if she still has them and wants to sell!

I would take only square (ascher or square cushion) & nice fat hearts as studs if round isn’t an option. Reasons being the same as others have mentioned.

I always see CS & jadeite cabochons in oval.
I seriously don’t know how to position them on my tiny lobes- vertically, horizontally or diagonally? Hence, not a fan!

My preference would be diagonal! I feel like that looks the most natural and effortless somehow.

......but again they will spin?
OCD person like me can’t take it, lol

They probably will spin, but I think you’ll notice it less than if you kept them perfectly horizontal or vertical. That being said, if you’re OCD about the orientation anything other than rounds are probably not a good fit for you!

Hi,

I had 1 carat oval studs. They constantly turned and were never both going the same direction. They looked so weird on and I couldn’t wait to get rid of them. I upgraded to 1.80 carats rounds and never looked back.

Essentially very long and thin baguettes, right? Is that something that would look good or not in your opinion Garry? I’m not sure if you meant that as best or worst because I can’t imagine them in my ears.

Ooh that’s super valuable feedback! Thanks for telling me!

For single-stone studs, I prefer rounds, but I also have some ovals and cushions. I think trillions could be neat. I can definitely see pears or marquise stones being set with the post on one end so they drop down a bit. I think I would probably be open to anything, really! Oh - I do have a pair of marquise hauynite druzy earrings, and when I wear them I fiddle with them to make sure they're oriented the way I want them to be. When talking about multiple stones together, I think any combination of shapes can be made to work! I saw these really fun CZ ear climbers in a shop the other day that had a bunch of different shapes, but all very small, and they looked really great.

Due to health and safety issues/concerns, earrings for pierced ears cannot be tried on in UK.

In addition to shapes, I can't wear anything that sit high on the earlobes, hence no big round pearls for me, as they make me look like a chameleon with budging eyes when I wore my hair short.

My hair is slightly longer now, and I may be able to wear those large pearl earrings again.

DK :))

Is this due to covid? Certainly pre-covid that was not the case. I've tried on earrings in multiple shops in the UK, both in England and Scotland. Just like here in the US, they disinfect the post before and after.

Ok this is now driving me crazy. Multiple message board posts state that trying on earrings is illegal or against health code in multiple places - most of which are places I've tried on earrings before - but google is turning up nothing but hearsay. Combed through the NYC health ordinances - which some people are sure outlaw it - and found nothing. Have googled specifically related to the UK and England, and have again found only rumor. Can any cite any specific laws or ordinances about this?

Worst: marquise

Best: marquise

:appl:

I feel like with trillions they can be a pain to keep clean, even more than ECs. I have a ring with trillions and they always look kinda cloudy and dull. It would be cool though to have a pair of triangular earrings!

@distracts no, not due to C19, it stamped from the mid to late 80s for fear of transmitting AIDS and Hepatitis C etc...

Perhaps that has changed in recent years as I have not bought any jewellery in UK for yonks, not even costume ones.

DK :))

I have a love/hate relationship with my princess-cut studs. I've had them for nearly seventeen years.

The LOVE: the squareness! I wear them both in the regular square orientation and then rotated so that the points are on the vertical axis.

The HATE: the basket setting they're in is so uncomfortable and pointy and stabby! I know that could have them re-set into drops, but I really like them as studs. I've been low-key looking for princesses in a bezel setting for years for inspiration.

I was specifically imagining them in CS rather than diamond, lol! I have heard that about them in diamonds.

Those are fluid-borne diseases - how would you transmit them by trying on an earring??? Piercing salons have to worry about it, yes, but if your ears are healed, there's next to no risk. Given that these are the two specific examples used all over the internet, I wonder if people are confusing legislation for piercing salons - where you must use sterile needles and usually prepackaged sterilized jewelry - and applying it to jewelry stores, which it does not actually apply to. Unless they are in the business of piercings, like Claires or wherever. Because I can find piercing salon laws/ordinances for all the areas where people are saying trying on earrings is outlawed, but nothing for jewelry stores beyond hallmarking of metal etc.

I wear princess (square brilliant) studs in all 4 of my lobe piercing's. I originally chose princess cuts because I hate rounds, or rather... I hate circles! Yes, as in the shape. I told my mom "I'm not a circle person, I'm a square" LOLOL hence I've only ever had princess cuts.. But I feel like this is a little outdated now?
I am interested in cushion studs... I don't see a lot of people with those and I wonder why!

Oh it’s great to know that you guys wear non-round studs! Does the askew-ness bother you?

I did an experiment with a pair of square shaped earrings I had lying around and found that studs don’t really rotate dramatically on my ear. They dont stay perfectly straight, but they don’t move a huge amount either. I also don’t get bothered by them not being aligned. So I think I might be a good candidate for non-round studs!

Actually closer to 2:1 - like this at 2.15

I just checked mine in the mirror, and I don't think mine rotate at all! they always seem to stay in their upright position. They're pretty small, so maybe that helps? And I keep the backs on very snug too.

Anything but rounds would drive me nuts due to trying to keep them in the same position. But if I had to pick a non-round pair, it would have 4 equal sides for sure. So asschers, french cuts, and Octavia would be my options. Ohh, and maybe square AVC-like antique cushions!

I LOVE Tiffany Victoria earrings, and I think that is a great choice for someone who doesn't want rounds. Because of the simple style, many other jewelers make that design. I think ID Jewelry does and others.

I guess size could definitely have a role to play - that and the snug backs. I also prefer to keep the backs snugly on and I don’t want very big studs so it should be okay. I think I’m pretty settled on either square or rectangular earrings for studs. I have a friend who has a pair she never wears so I’m going to ask her why before I make my decision though.

Ooh the Victoria-style earrings are pretty; but they’re just not my style somehow. I’ve tried them on before in the past and I just don’t like them on myself, I don’t know why.

I think I’ve demonstrated to myself that askewness doesn’t bother me particularly; but I need to determine whether that holds only for square shapes or also rectangles. If rectangles are also ok to me I might go for ECs since they’re my favourite diamond cut. Otherwise perhaps step cut squares (sq emerald or asscher!)

@distracts your guess is as good as mine, and I remember earrings are exempt from the T&Cs relating to exchange, return and refund for as long as I can remember.

However, that might have changed in recent years.

Whatever shape, the post has to be in the middle, because if it gets off-center from my piercing hole, i get a lil batty ;0

Thus, I prefer elongated/heart/marquise shapes to be on a drop, or dangle, that way they are always the correct orientation.

Totally agree! I have a pair of radiants where the post is towards the top and they drive me crazy because they never stay straight up and down.

+ a billion. If I could get asschers that are as sparkly as the ones in my eternity ring, I'd buy them in a heart beat.

Having just looked at a bunch of UK jeweler website, this seems to vary by jeweler. Only a few had earrings exempt from return - places I now know never to buy earrings from!
