Hello all,

For those who live in the bay area, cali, can I ask how much you got quoted for your platinum setting? Solitaire knife edge 4 prongs 1.8 mm.

Thank you.

They're going to want to see a picture of it on here :). If you have a specific design in mind link it and the folks here can give you a good price range to shoot for.

Oh really thanks I didn't know! It's just I had a design in mind and their quote too expensive so I changed it to knife edge solitaire. As you guys can see I wanted the twisty ring but with no diamonds, just plain platinum, but they asked for $4000. So I wanna know the ballpark number for it. Just wanna be informed so I know it's not overpriced. Thank you.

I would call up Joe Escobar in Campbell.

My SIL had her ring re-set done there (all plat) and it is GREAT.

Many other PSers have gone there and had excellent experiences, as well.

You can get a quote from them, and then you'll have a better idea of your current place is the right pick or not.

I second the idea of contacting Joe Escobar in Campbell (Erik there is great, but everyone there is quite helpful, knowledgeable and professional). I recently had them reset a stone into a platinum setting, and it was perfect, easy, and reasonably priced imho. I've also had them do repairs and custom work, all well done and within budget.
I've worked with several jewelers in that area, and I have to say that they are the easiest to deal with and have provided the most professional and beautiful results.

There are zillions of bays in the world.
To which one are you referring?

I've asked and 3-4 k is common for cast platinum custom pieces. Thus, I considered hand forged. Not much different in price but much higher in quality, for the design that I wanted at least.

OP said 'bay area, cali'

That refers to the San Francisco Bay Area.

There is also a Bay Area in Southern California (Santa Monica Bay), but we just call that the South Bay. There is also a South Bay in Northern California, which would constitute San Jose and the surrounding areas.

Confusing, to be sure, but this person is clearly talking about SF.

Thank you guys for the advice. Sorry I didn't clarify which Bay area hence the confusion. I've gone to stores from San fran to San Jose. My main concern is pricing. There's so many expenses I'm considering changing the set to white gold the store said it may save me about $1200. Then change the setting to platinum once we're settled down and stable. Has anyone ever done that?

Anyway, I'll call up Joe to ask. Thanks again!

It would cost you more in the long run to change it to platinum. spend an extra $1200 now versus save $1200 now another $3K later? Net additional cost of $1800. I would bite the bullet now if I was going to keep the ring for at least 5 years.

Yes, definitely contact Joe Escobar. I use them all the time for stuff, they're great!

A knife-edge solitaire of high quality in platinum should cost maybe around $1200-1800 MAX. The upper end of the range would be for a branded setting such as Vatche. Do not pay more than this range, and absolutely go with the platinum in the first place. Vatche is carried by jewelers all over the US, so if you like any of theirs, you can go to their site and see if you have a jeweler in your area that carries the line.
