I found this site recently. It is a great site. I am looking to take a basic course for understanding gems offered in the NJ area. I would like to take this course to understand gems enough to buy and sell. I am not looking to be a gematologist (at least not now!!!)

Does anyone know if such courses are offered in the NJ/PA area?
Thanks

If you're not looking for a curriculum designed to get you a gemologist's degreee, but would like to understand gems better, you might consider the inexpensive internet courses offered by Robert James, FGA, at www.yourgemologist.com.

A lot of information for the money.

Neat Rich. I need to check that out too.

I don't know if this helps, but I know a community college around me is offering a one night course in Diamonds and another night course in Gemstones for $10 ea. While it may be ultra basic, I may take it to get out there and just see some stuff without wasting a jewelers time.

Thanks Rich.

Just curious - how long does it take to become a gemologist. Where are the certification courses offered.

In addition, I have posted a question on the Lab Grading survey section regarding pricing. I tried to move the posting to make it a new posting but was unsuccesful. Could you please look at the posting and perhaps answer my question.

Thanks Again!!!!
