Got this today finally! 7.3x5.5mm, 1.34 cts. Neon purple supernova spinel. It's medium dark but it's really sparkly!

Thanks! Yeah, the flashes are like a highlighter. I can't get a pic like Barry's..I can *see* it when I play with it, but can't get it on camera.

I love Barry's supernovas and this one is beautiful, packrat! You've got a great collection of purples. I'll ask the inevitable "what are your plans for this stone?". It's good to see you picking up more stones :)) .

That's such a pretty stone! Isn't frustrating when you can't capture with the camera what you see with your eyes? All three of your purples are lovely, but the supernova really draws the eye. :appl:

Thanks guys! I've nooo clue what I'm going to do w/it! None. Totally open for any ideas you want to chuck at me.

I'll see if I can get some pics in other lighting. Maybe the laundry room..that seems to show good color. Ugh, it's frustrating to think ooo I need a shot of *this* b/c it's so sparkly and pretty and then when I look at them on the computer I'm like what stone is this? Can't be the one I just took pics of, they look nothing alike.

Does your camera have a macro mode? It's usually the flower icon on most cameras.

Yeah, that's what I was using. Even w/the flower, I can't get super close. I've not been overly impressed w/this camera.

What happens when you hold the stone closer to the camera with the macro mode on? I recommend trying to take a photo around six inches away, and then see what happens.

They're blurry if too close. Instead of the little beeping when it focuses and then the green light flashing, it's silent and gives me a red light.

Well, I can see the color better in your last photos. Pretty stone.

I see the light !!!!
That stone has a powerful spark, you can tell in the last couple of shots !

It seems as though some stones just don't want to co-operate for close ups,
leaving a lot to our imaginations around here !

I have the older Kodak and it allows me to get about 6 inches away from the stone so you should be able to get much closer too. It looks quite purple in your pictures and I can't make out a single facet. I really want to see it up close. I find that it also takes better outdoor pictures. It seems to require more light with indoor photography.

Do like Chrono does. Wait until the sun comes out, and perch it on the box top, on a table, so it's very very still. Then try taking a photo. You might be shaking too much when you take the photo since you're holding the stone (as well as the camera) in your hand. Too much wobble and some cameras just cannot focus. I also hold my breath when I take photos as even sometimes the act of breathing can cause a fuzzy picture.

I second the idea of resting BOTH hands on something if you want to hold the stone. I need to have my camera hand supported and the hand holding the stone braced against something to minimize the shaking. Either that, or rest the stone on a stable surface and hold the camera using both hands. Either that or spring for a tripod.

ETA
It also looks like you attached the entire jpeg which PS then cropped to the point where I can't make out a single facet. To get the super close ups, you'll need to crop the picture yourself using Paint or a similar software. Crop out a portion around the stone, then save it under a different file name and you'll see that by doing so, you've automatically added a sort of zoom feature where the stone is enlarged.
