I am the lucky owner of a lovely AVC.
My dear friend who I see in all lighting conditions wears a beautiful modern round brilliant, which I believe is ideal-cut (from a PS-approved vendor).

Her round brilliant appears brighter (light-return wise) and more sparkly in almost all lighting conditions than my AVC.

Is this my imagination or are RBs really that much more brilliant than AVCs?

I don't know the specs of either stone (mine was a gift so I don't want to know), but I know my AVC is not a "warm" colored one, and both are similarly sized.

ETA: I don't believe this is a color issue.

The facet structure is totally different so they are supposed to look different! The AVC will have edge to edge brightness since it is ideal cut, but it has those large, beautiful facets that reflect light in a totally different way than a round brilliant with it's tiny facets. If someone wants maximum sparkle, then they should go with a top cut round brilliant. But others prefer the amazing look of the chunky faceted cushions like the AVC.

As for me, I like BOTH. Just like I like more than one flavor of icecream! They each have their own characteristics while both are very beautiful.

I posted a thread about my own experience comparing an AVC to an RB. I think that the chunkier facets and slower scintillation of the AVC is less "eye catching" from a distance. I consider chunkier cuts to be personal cuts, for the wearer's enjoyment. If you want to catch someone's eye accross the room, nothing beats an RB.

What you note is not a flaw in your stone. It is simply the difference between the cuts and how they perform optically.

Thank you both. I do understand the difference in facet structures (hence the appeal of the AVC).
But my girlfriend's ring appears to be lit from within! I thought the AVC would have the same "brightness" or "glow" since it's cut for ideal light performance (on a side note, I do keep my ring very clean).

The chunky look of the AVC is what originally attracted me. Dreamer, your "personal cuts" distinction makes complete sense.

Diamondseeker, I like your ice cream analogy (but I wish multiple scoops of diamonds were as affordable as that delicious treat!)

Oh, you and me BOTH!!!!!!!

Speaking from the eye, I have been wearing a 1.7 ct AVC on my left hand and a 1.7 ct OEC (ok not a round brilliant) on my right hand for the past 2 weeks - both are in pave filled solitaire settings. I will tell you that the OEC is the eye grabber and a crazy sparkler in almost all lighting situations. It looks like a disco ball and I can't stop looking at it.

I can only imagine how ForteKitty feels with her OEC.

I think it is hard to compare the "sparkle factor" of an AVC or any other chunky cushion to a modern round brilliant. They are both very sparkly cuts under certain lighting conditions but to me they sparkle in very different ways. I think that modern round brilliants throw of loads of closely packed together sparkles almost like tons of pindots or slivers of bright light being reflected back at you. It has a lot of impact all at once. I have a chunky cushion (not an AVC) but a very well cut one and the kind of sparkle I get from my ring is more like big broad flashes of light off one chunky facet or another - similar to the kind of flash of light you get when you shine a mirror into the sun and back quickly. I find that my cushion tends to really sparkle most in ambient light (like on a sunny day but when I'm a partially shaded area) or when I'm in a dimly lit room (like at a restaurant). The majority of my friends have MRBs and they sparkle like mad in the sun and under studio lights (and many other conditions).

I guess that's a long way of saying I don't really think one outshines the other...I think it is a matter of preference and personal taste - just like diamond cut/shape preferences!

Body tint: The AVC might be a lower color and her RB a high color. From about K on down, the brilliance thrown is a little tinted compared to D-G range, is what I think. The whiter whites, my eyes seem to see as larger and bolder.

The faceting and proportions of the RB could be balanced between brilliance and fire, or could be biased toward one or the other. The AVC is an old-style cushion, and they were possibly cut more for fire that brilliance. More fire = less white light reflected back, and sometimes that makes the diamond look darker.
