Assessing yellow ovals - would appreciate some help!

We will probably wind up doing just that. I don't have access to much yellow variety locally, but I have seen enough yellow stones over the years to have a sense of what appeals to me. Apart from that, I'm going to have to rely on the vendor (and you lovely folks) to be my eyes. :)

You've now had me wandering off to look at pears, which weren't originally on my radar. What do you think of this one?

Any chance of ordering both and sending back the one you dont like (or both if you dont like either). It would be so nice to have
them both to compare.

Thanks, Simone! That post was really enlightening in terms of the design process - gave me much to think about. While I did not know the term, we had already talked about "cupping" the stone in yellow gold to accent the color.

Ah yes, that’s is a hike, but the stones that Tyty posted are also beautiful and under budget.

A “cup” is a cup/sheet of gold that is placed under the stone and part of the basket that can greatly enhance diamond’s yellow color. The trick is for the setting to be executed nicely and leave enough openings to clean the stone. This is probably one of the best examples: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/dk-cad-assistance-needed.234335/page-11

I do think that stone is pretty...how would you set the pear? Same as oval?

I think so. My inspiration ring is this one, although not in rose gold: Screen Shot 2018-07-24 at 12.48.09 PM.png
I'd like to cup the center stone in yellow gold, then either use white gold or platinum in the remainder of the setting. I also might want to exchange the pears for half moon sides. What I like about this is the halo only around the center and the clean look of the side stones next to it. Most halos I have seen have also extended to the sides, and all those prongs just look insanely busy to my eye.

I would imagine I could have a pear set similarly if I went in that direction.

Heard back from the owner of the LT stone - she unfortunately doesn't have any flexibility re: review/return of the stone, which I totally understand. Plus side is that it's still out there if one of you needs to have it! :)

This is a similar kind of setting, but with half moons:

Of course, my stone won't be a 5 carat whopper, but I'm certain I'll be madly in love with it. :)

Beautiful inspiration! I am sure that your end ring will be stunning!

Thanks! I do like the elegance of the ForeverMark one a bit better. I think it's the tapered prongs. The whole thing just looks so fluid to me, which I think is really hard to achieve with halo settings (or at least the halos I have seen).

I agree, but I would also make sure that you have enough real estate on your delicate finger for pear side stones. Would you consider a split shank at all? I am not sure what is your budget for the setting, but any side stone might run a bit more than simple melee.

Thanks for posting that! Dani Ganz (at Leibish) had sent me additional photos of two other ovals they have, a .72 and .74:

I hadn't seen the stone you posted, but I will take a closer look in a bit.

As for the setting, that's why I'm thinking about half moon side stones rather than pears...I think the overall effect will give me the soft, rounded edges I'm looking for. I do think I'll have enough finger real estate - here's my .76 Whiteflash ACA (setting is Beverley K) for reference:

Beverley K setting II.jpg

Unlike that setting, however, I haven't seen any semi-mounts I loved right off the bat - although that would certainly be the easier route! I'm afraid we're going to have to have this ring made.

OP, I also like this stone: https://www.leibish.com/yellow-diamonds/fancy-intense-yellow-oval-34232
Leibniz has also has an eBay page and you can make an offer in their stones there: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/202356611667

I like the 0.72 FIY a lot! I would ask to compare that to the .71 that I posted. Dani is great to work with, she helped me find a match to my FIY diamond to create a pair of studs. I think that you will be able to do either - pears or half moons, but the setting has to be executed well. As you want a halo for an oval, I would advice custom as no stock setting will fit an oval perfectly. DK can execute a beautiful setting at a very attractive price point.

You ACA in Beverly K is gorgeous!

I'll definitely ask her to do that. I'm due to call her in a bit and will ask her to include your suggested stone in the batch.

Thank you! The center stone was in my original engagement ring (a very heavy Tacori thing that I'm not certain what to do with...I replaced the center with an Asscher cut mint Merelani garnet, but I never really wear it). I bought the Beverley K to celebrate my divorce a few years ago. :) Am now marrying the right person and we're designing the ring together. He's the one who picked out the oval/half moon setting above, so he's got a great eye!

I am happy that you found the right person and it is awesome that you are working on the ring together! I fancy yellow will be very different than your original ring and it will certainly signify a new beginning.

That said, your “divorce” ring is pretty awesome as well:) you can always try selling he original Tacori, there are still plenty of people who love the brand!

By back to the design - I do like the half moons a lot, especially if those will fit your finger better. I would only make sure that they are colorless and match the meleè well.

Select the center stone first and then spend some time on the design. :)
