Proposal Asking for Mom's Blessing

My GF's parents are divorced so I thought it would be the right thing to ask both Mom and Dad separately for their blessing.

This weekend is my last free chance before I propose to go ask Mom (already asked Dad). I'm wondering what would be the best way to go about it if I do because I feel a little awkward texting beforehand to ask to talk to her in-person. Should I:

1) Text this week before I go?
2) Go there and text once I'm in the area?
3) No need to go down there, a hand-written letter would serve just as well.

How far away is mom? Personally I think in person is better (take her out for tea or lunch), but a phone call would work if you can't get there. I think texting to ask is pretty gauche.

Only 3 hours. I was either going to text today or tomorrow to let her know I plan to come down on Saturday, or just text her Saturday once I get there to ask if she is free.

Oh, texting is OK to ask if she's free. I thought you were saying you were going to ask for her blessing via text. I would text before you make the drive.
