Hello

I have been looking at other post related to Ashoka but very little has been written recently!
https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/mark-at-erd-does-it-again-ashoka-ring.174813/

I am looking for a beautiful stone, about 2 carats, in New York, preferably E-G maybe H?, VVS-VS1 or2? (Please I would like opinions of entusiastic, passionate experts here : ))

With a beautiful stone, I think I would like the setting to be minimal.
I'm not opposed to second-hand but most Ashoka I found were either mounted with pave, or weirdly obliquely placed (Boodles, mark Broumand, even Goldberg who claims the copyright of the current Ashoka cut but weren't there some in the 50's?)

I think I like the Ashoka the best but then it seems some modified cushions with unusual elongated proportions could also work:
https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/never-seen-one-like-this-thoughts.118271/

Any idea where I could start my search?

Since these cuts are never parts of the search engine on most big providers (GoodOldGold etc...) I don't quite know how to proceed.

Thank you very much for your precious help!

Re: Ashoka, Tycoon, Barocut, Princecut: modified emerald/cus

Yes thank you ! I saw that one but I never saw a crisscut " in person". I would buy a ring with GIA on ebay but I'm still a bit shy to buy a stone without someone professionally looking at it. Do you think I could buy it and bring it to someone in the diamond district to look at it?
I realized I would like to edit my post to extend the search worldwide : ) but I don't know how since it's the first time I post here.

Thank you for your response!

William Goldberg 5th Ave for Ashoka or do search for L'Amour Crisscut New York

For an evaluation, I'm happy to recommend David Wolf (Just Appraisers) at 608 Fifth Ave. Excellent reputation & credentials; office is well equipped; he's very nice, very informative -- sitting with him is like having a personalized, diamond "tutorial".

Re: Ashoka, Tycoon, Barocut, Princecut: modified emerald/cus

AH my reply vanished!
I read that if I buy at W Goldberg it would be more than if I was to find it from an online store or reseller where they don't only sell Ashoka.
Is it true that all Ashoka come from W Goldberg anyway?
Even the ones at Finks (mostly sold out http://finksjewelers.com/engagement-rings-asscher-and-ashoka/) are sourced from Goldberg. Which is why there are so very few it seems.

Please help!
I read also that someone called "MArk at ERD" sourced a couple of Ashoka for people on this forum??
Does anyone is more knowledgeable about this by chance?
Merciii

Re: Ashoka, Tycoon, Barocut, Princecut: modified emerald/cus

The only thing I can add is that I had a positive experience with diamonddr16, the eBay vendor who's listed the CrissCut diamond that Lookingagain linked for you. I ended up returning the ring (boulder opal, diamond accents) -- which was described accurately, looked like his photos -- because I didn't love it on my hand, but he was pleasant about my returning it & gave me a prompt refund.

So I'd say buying the CrissCut from him to see if you like it in person is not a risky proposition.

ETA: ERD (Engagement Rings Direct) is now Brilliantly Engaged; contact info here:
https://www.brilliantlyengaged.com/site-page/contactus.html
Think you would pleased to work with them, both in terms of hunting for a stone & crafting the ring for it.

Re: Ashoka, Tycoon, Barocut, Princecut: modified emerald/cus

The first place that replied to my inquiry about the price range for a 2ct Ashoka is in New Zealand: "To give you a price guide, you could be looking anywhere between $65,000.00 and $75,000.00 depending on colour. We did have an SI1 stone that was less expensive and we had a VVS stone that was a lot more. "
It seems a lot, lot more than in the US no?
Did anyone buy an Ashoka between 1.5-2ct and please give me an idea of the price range compared to a 2ct emerald or asscher?
Thank you!!!

Re: Ashoka, Tycoon, Barocut, Princecut: modified emerald/cus

I just looked at a lovely 3 stone Ashoka at Finks. I believe the center stone was 2 cts. It was 39k (US).

Re: Ashoka, Tycoon, Barocut, Princecut: modified emerald/cus

Oh really?

Do you mean at one of their stores? What grade/colour were the stones

Because online there is only that one: http://finksjewelers.com/finks-platinum-three-stone-ashoka-engagement-ring/ but they don't say which grade or if GIA??

Do you think they have more than the only one remaining online? It seems sold out on all the other models and this one seems chunky and not high quality stones?

Thank you for letting me know!

Real life photos in this July 2014 thread of the halo'd Ashoka ring -- with 1.5 ct, H, VS2 center stone -- that a PSer scored off eBay for an amazing price, less than $6500:

formerly Engagement Rings Direct (ERD), now called Brilliantly Engaged (BE)

Re: Ashoka, Tycoon, Barocut, Princecut: modified emerald/cus

I agree with the others ask Brilliantly Engaged (formerly ERD), or Good Old Gold what they can call in (they can find better stones for you from the cutters) or even Grace at Jewels by Grace what she can find for you, she might have contacts that can get one for you or know of or have seen an usual cut for sale in passing....

She had an Ashoka for sale recently and sometimes gets unusual cuts in;

http://www.jewelsbygrace.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=ashoka

Some of the Antique stones she has in occasionally have more facets or interestingly different cut patterns too....

Re: Ashoka, Tycoon, Barocut, Princecut: modified emerald/cus

I was in the actual Finks store. Don't go off of the website. You actually need to call the stores. It is such a rare stone that they don't keep a large quantity on hand at any specific store. I think each store is rather protective of its local inventory. My understanding is that the cut is patented by William Goldberg. For the longest time, only Finks, Boodles, and a couple others were authorised dealers. Of course that may have changed. There are a few they make it back onto the market via owner sales or trade ins to dealers.

I have always loved this cut and stop by Finks when I am near. Large stones are few and far between. About 2 weeks ago, I tried on a 3 stone Ashoka (no halo -which they almost always have halos). The center was 2.03 cts VS2 h. The side stones were another 1.46ctw. Not sure the clarity and color of the sides. The ring was just shy of 39k. There was a loose stone as well. It was 1.75 cts SI1 g and was 22k.

The biggest issue really is the premium you pay for these stones. I THINK the newer L'amour cut MIGHT be more reasonable in price. You may get more finger coverage for your money because the L'amour is cut as a shallower stone so there is more carat weight facing up. I believe it faces up about 45% bigger than the same carat weight in a correctly cut emerald. I have seen both the ashoka and L'amour in person. I personally like the ashoka better BUT they do have some simiarities. The L'amour definitely is a unique stone and may be easier to find as there are more authorised crisscut dealers vs Ashoka dealers.

As others have said though, the Ashoka does turn up from time to time in other places so it might just be a case of waiting patiently for the right opportunity.

Sorry for rambling...typing this on my cell phone.

Re: Ashoka, Tycoon, Barocut, Princecut: modified emerald/cus

Thank you for the tip. I had seen that but they don't say much about the quality of the stone, if GIA nor the price. But you reminded me to inquire!
Chris from Brilliantly Engaged replied but he has only crisscuts to show... where is my Ashoka hiding??!

Re: Ashoka, Tycoon, Barocut, Princecut: modified emerald/cus

WOW thank you for all this. it's really helpful!
I wish I wish I could go to Finks but I'm in New York and Boston... a little trip south to try rings like you do for pleasure might be an idea. I didn't see any solitary online but I think it shows the cut better as a solitary than as a 3 stones. And that would be an almost right price... if it wasn't an S1 : / isn't it strange to choose an S1 for a rare cut? Or is it the only way to make semi affordable? I can't imagine what a VS1 would be then?

I will call them!

The strangest thing is I also found older sites showing Ritani Ashoka on sale for 4k?!
I don't know from when but it seems like there was a sort of fad and that it calmed down? Maybe all because of Reese's ring?

Do you own an Ashoka yourself? If so I posted to ask people to show me their beauties but so far, no luck : (

I also don't know the L'Amour cut! I will check it out.

At Beautifully Engaged, Chris (not Mark... should I ask for Mark? It's a bit delicate once a dealer responds no?) they ofrered to show me 2 crisscuts but really compared to Ashoka, they are less subtle. Although: much better than Tycoon cut I think.

On top I would prefer fuorescence but I don't know how fluorescence would affect an Ashoka...

If ever you go back, please feel free to take pictures : D

Boodles is one of the UK's very high end jewellers. I would expect that the color and clarity of all of their diamonds are very good, and I should think that all the Ashoka's have GIA certs. Definitely worth asking.

Re: Ashoka, Tycoon, Barocut, Princecut: modified emerald/cus

Not sure if you are still looking or not but I was by Finks this weekend and took a picture of the 3 stone Ashoka mentioned in my above conment. I do love this ring.
