ASET Opinions for OEC

Hey! Please give me your opinions on this ASET. The stone has all of the characteristics that I am looking for but it is pricey. Please ignore the dark smudges. The stone is VS1 so I'm mainly concerned with the lack of red around the edges. Thanks!

Looks good to me but I don't put much stock in ASET. Seems the same stone can look totally different depending how its tilted. I would rather see more photos of the diamond, the profile. But the one photo you have looks very nice. I think its a great classic make.

looks great. the photo and aset shows strong kozibe. if you've seen the stone in person did you notice it in person?

Looks very nice. Actually, I find the IS more useful than ASET for all round shaped diamonds (either modern RB or OEC).

IMO, based on all my studies of old cuts it seems that the Kozibe effect suggests that the cut is a quality cut. You will notice that all the new AVR's have the Kozibe effect and that warm 5c honker on GOG which is one of the best true antique OEC's Jon has ever seen has the Kozibe effect.

I normally would not consider an EGL SI1 but Adam says it is eye clean and and the inclusions are a cluster of gray pinpoints deep within the stone. He did mention the stone looks hazy in the sun due to the med blue fluoro so I don't know.

I'm having both of these shipped to me today so I can look them over. These stones are both rather pricey but he did give me a nice discount on both. I'm just tired of hunting on ebay and other sites looking for deals.

I would heed Adam's caution of the haziness when viewed outdoors due to the fluorescence. I thought that it is only a concern with strong blue though, not medium blue. Do let us know when you receive them.

I received both stones and now I'm confused. The GIA I is very bright with crisper looking facets but it looks very very tinted; I wonder how much that has to do with the rose gold setting. (I wish he had removed the stone from the setting but I understand why he didn't want to).
It looks more tinted than my KL stone so I figure it must be the rose gold. I also like the large culet. Also, I see a 3 digit number on the girdle of this one. Does anyone know what that is about? I wish an antique stone hadn't been stamped with a number.

The EGL stone is probably the cleanest SI1 I have ever seen. I like the smaller table and higher crown. At certain angles it seems that the table facets are deep within the stone and there is some darkness in a ring around the table. You can kind of see it in this pic: Is this nailhead? Overall the stone is very pretty. It's raining here so I will have to wait to examine the fluoro.

I will try to take some pics later but I have a difficult time with it. Any more comments would be greatly appreciated.

That stone does not seem to have nailhead. Maybe just some obstruction? That's also the feeling I get with my 1.75 -- the center facets seem to be "deeper" in the stone, like they are not on the same level sometimes. That's when there is a shadow over them.

I'm surprised that the GIA I looks so tinted in the rose gold. I've had a GIA-J look super white when set in yellow gold, and an estimated (not yet graded) K-L look very warm in the same yellow gold setting. Maybe it's a stone by stone thing.

How's the fluorescence? Pics would be great!

I think the tint is coming from the setting. I find that metal colour can play a surprisingly strong role in influencing the perception of colour or lack of. It appears that sometimes GIA lasers the identifying lab number on the diamond's girdle. It's a nice way to help ID your stone when it goes off to the jeweller for work.

Thanks Chrono. I called Adam and unfortunately the 3 digit number is their inventory number. He said they number all of their stones. I wonder if it could be lasered off? I believe OWD has a trade up policy so maybe the number has to be there for an upgrade.

How interesting! I wonder why? I wonder how many other vendors do this?

I am sure the numbering is to simplify their tracking - matching stone to the lab memo, web listing and more. I am sure it can be removed but are the cons worth it?

The loose diamond has very serious leakage under the table. I can see it in that photo you posted and that is what you describe as a ring around the table. The lower halves are very short and the table too large to support it. Perhaps the angles of the pavilion facets are not lined up. I would eliminate it.

The other stone is a GIA I color and that is what it is. The tint is likely from the mount. I have noticed that yellow metals add at least 2-3 coloe grades to a diamond!

Gem: that EGL Si1 is nothing like your amazing 1.75ct. There is no comparison in the makes in my opinion.

And I wonder if the haze Adam mentioned in the sunlight is in fact the leakage. Leakage can look like a yellow haze, or "mush" as Yssie calls it, in bright sunlight.

Dreamer -- thanks for the nice words about the 1.75. It *is* a gorgeous stone and I appreciate you sticking up for it! I'll need to get your opinion on the 1.54 when it comes back from its spa treatment

I'll second the comment about a GIA-I being a GIA-I. Too bad that it reacts badly to the rose gold setting. I will look unrecognizable in a different setting, I bet.

Thanks very much for your expertise Dreamer! I have decided to go with the first stone (GIA I) as long as it looks gorgeous unset. I will post pics when I receive it. Now I'm on the hunt for the perfect necklace or pendant setting. I'm looking for something simple and dainty, probably not a bezel. I think I would like the depth and crown of the stone to be visible from the sides, kind of like GemFever's 1.75 setting except in platinum. Does anyone have some recs?
