I may be so off on this but it seems that most stones with flouresence are round. I wonder if there is any reason for this.

I suppose it is because it seems the most popular shape is the round diamond, if you mean the diamonds we see here and with online vendors. Fluoresence is a natural characteristic of the actual diamond substance, and it can be a complex process for the cutters to decide what shape to cut the rough diamond in, so that can depend on the final shape chosen, so any shape diamond could show fluorescence, if the diamond has fluorescent abilities.

As you enjoy this subject, I don't know if you have seen this info, but I will post it anyway.

Also see this video showing blue fluorescence in action!

Good info here too!

Thanks Lore.

I was wondering if that is actually the reason why. Still, it seems like more rounds have it than any others.

That is my thinking, I have seen some pics of fluorescent fancy shapes before, so they are out there, but I guess it is because rounds are the most popular it seems, that we don''t see these so much.

I would love a low coloured huge cushion with either medium or strong blue fluorescence, that would be a delight!!

I have long suspected/wondered if my OMC has green flo, after noticing a disticnt greenish hue in many of my sun shots.

That would be so cool, I wonder if there is anyway we can tell for sure...

The shape of the rough is what determines the shape of the finished diamond & that crystal formation takes place at the atomic level. If the right conditions are present that rough will have fluorescence, regardless of whether it grows into an octahedron, dodecahedron, etc. There has been speculation that strain influences fluorescence but if this was the case you would expect twinned crystals (macles) to have a greater frequency - meaning trilliants would most often have fluor - and this is not the case.

I imagine Lorelei's observation is why you've noted this. Far more round diamonds are produced than other shapes.

I''m thinking too much again.

Way cool info (including the one on my other question today), John, thanks.

This is the one that really made me go hmmm, and start scrutenizing all the other pics.

My asscher and oval have it. I love fluoresence!!

Part of the reason may be that the bottom of the barrel mass producers cut mostly rounds.
Since fluorescence brings in less per ct polished more of it likely gets into the hands of the mass producers.

I know of one cutter of very high end RB's (not WF, although from whats been said Brian don't let them into his ACA brand.) who will not cut strong or v-strong and passes them on to others.

It is also rare in the stones cut by the top 2 cutters of quality SE cuts so I suspect they may do the same.

What is an SE cut?

You can get a black light in Home Depot for about $15.

Groovy, baby!! Yeah!!!

Ellen, you can purchase a blacklight bulb in many...hrm..."novelty" establishments. Like places that sell goth-typey stuff or Spencer''s Gifts if you''re in the States. And they aren''t dreadfully expensive, per se, but not really worth it maybe if you''re just buying it to see flourescence.

OR you could always...go to the discotheque, baby! Yeah! They always have UV lights in there. You must go clubbing this very moment!!!

Surely. I am such a geek that I have this in my briefcase right now.

Here is a whole page of fun - a proper appraiser will always have something along these lines and a lot of cool jewelers do too.

Awesome! I want one.

That''s not expensive either, I would have guessed more.

It looks like anyone can order from there, is that correct John?
