Are cabs more wearable?

I know sapphires, spinels, and chrysos are good stones for e rings.

if a stone is a cab, though, does that open up any other stones for everyday e ring wear?

consider that it would also be bezeled.

They can still get chipped and abraded, but I would imagine they're easier to polish out than a faceted gem.

The question is how far they stick out from the setting.

For example the sugarloaf shape (which I personally love) is a bad player in daily wear. That may be one reason why you see them so rarely.

So slow dome is better than a high one. I could see that. But to LT's point, would it be easier to polish out a high dome than a low one?

and the what type of stone would be better for getting dinged and just chipping rather than cracking?

Hello All :wavey:

TL is correct about re-working the gem if abraded or dinged. I have repaired a ton of cabochon cut gems in the mount when I did trade work where the faceted gems must be removed.

Yes high dome stones are easier to manipulate around the wheels unless the issue is near the bezel then they all are the same as far as difficulty. But generally speaking the highest point to the dome usually gets the most damage as it usually comes in contact with the harder object first that causes the damage.

Any gem you can facet you can cut en cabochon; but with faceted gems you have more edges and they tend to be the areas that will nick and chip/abrade where the smooth rounded surface of the cabochon cut is more like to slide off the obstruction instead of catching and chipping. But the minerals characteristics remain the same with any style you choose to cut the gem. So the harder, tougher gems will wear better than the brittle or softer gem minerals. Basically just because you cab the gem does not mean it is indestructible :o or will escape damage from things like car door handles,

I hope that makes sense :?

I love cabochons and some of the most lovely emeralds I have ever seen were cut en cabochon... Also many of the saturated gems like Zambian amethyst, etc. make lovely cabochons as the gem glows and looks like liquid grade jelly :D

I have worn large and high cabs for years w/o damage........of course, I don't wear them 24/7 but I do wear them every time I leave the house and I'm not particularly careful. love the look and they are certainly statement pieces.

facets are just going to naturally wear down over time. I admired a woman's sapphire cab one day.....and she informed me it had been faceted...it is her e-ring and she wears it 24/7 but she still loves it.
