Personally I would rather have the opinion of an independant appraiser but it comes down to your comfort level.Date: 2/14/2010 9:20:19 AM

If a gemologist looks at my diamond and says its feather inclusion would not cause any problems, do I still need to take it to an appraiser?
It depends on what you’re trying to learn. The question of whether a particular inclusion is a durability concern is a gemological one, and not usually a terribly difficult one. I can’t address whether your chosen gemologist is capable, equipped and willing to answer this but it’s certainly possible. Some are and some aren’t. Appraising involves a few additional steps. One is assigning a value as relates to a particular marketplace of concern to you and one is preparing a legal document on the topic for insurance, court, marketing or other purposes. Most jewelry appraisers are at least moderately capable gemologists, most gemologists are not capable appraisers.Date: 2/14/2010 9:20:19 AM
