Appraisal First????

I am about to purchase a pretty expensive ring, that has a fancy vivid yellow. I want to get it appraised before I buy it, but the jewelry store said it has to be paid in full before it leaves the store. Is this the usual process? Should they not have confidence in their diamond?

It's probably not so much not having confidence in their diamond as not having confidence that something might happen to it while it's out of their insurance coverage.
