Anyone watching True Detective?

I thought the first episode tried way too hard, but by the episode second I'm already sucked in. I'd love to talk theories with anyone else who's watching.

I'm getting more into it, I love the music (T-Bone Burnett, how can you go wrong) and it has a great cast. I hope the pace picks up a bit. Since my beloved Boardwalk Empire is ending after next season I'm going to need a new show

I thought the first episode tried way too hard, but by the episode second I'm already sucked in. I'd love to talk theories with anyone else who's watching.

YES! we LOVE it. I was planning to watch as soon as I heard of it and who was in it though, but it had us immediately. I wondered if Leonard Cohen music was involved at all, because some of it sounded similar to that, and with Woody Harrelson being in NBK there was a lot of Cohen on the NBK Soundtrack.

We didn't think anything tried too hard. We did feel like they were trying to cram too much IN to too little space.

Ok this is my guesstimation:

My suspicion so far is that I think that they're interviewing them (separately) because they think that Marty succumbed to the senator(?)'s pressure to get an arrest and conviction based on all the "satanic crap" going on and that Rust didn't believe they have the right guy (as evidenced in the more recent similar killings they mentioned in his interviews). Because they didn't agree, and they were already not really on the best terms, that caused them to fight and split up. And obviously Rust wasn't really thrilled with Marty being a total cheat either. And Rust is kind of a hot mess, as we can all see. No one within the department seemed to like Rust anyway, so it was easy for them to move along separately. So now they're interviewing them because they want to know what they still recall from the case because the case is being reopened, and that Rust will probably be taking over it, possibly involving something to Marty's detriment.

My husband also wonders if they think Rust is the killer. Or that Marty's being taken down somehow.

We are both wildly impressed at how true to the era they've been with costuming and whatnot. Except their watches seem too new and fancy in a few scenes

Sidebar: Rust could be like...my husband, in terms of all the "there is no god" discussions they have. All of that existential stuff he goes on about is seriously like...my husband. It's wild. We look at each other and go "who read your mind".

I LOVE this show! I've only seen the first episode, my husband had it on and I got sucked in - love detective/crime-solving shows, dh calls them murder and mayhem lol. Love that the lead actors are among the best in the business, just a quality show all around. Glad to hear the second episode is even better - will be back with comments!

I think the writers are trying to lead us to believe that Rust was the killer but I think it's gonna be someone else and Rust went off the deep end because he knew they had the wrong guy and there was nothing he could do about it. I think Marty is a huge misogynst and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if he had a bit of woman beater in him. Also, did you notice Marty doesn't have his wedding ring on in 2012. Not a big shocker, but clearly his wife didn't put up with him forever.

Oh and yes, the costuming has been great. 90's fashion was so awful but man I want the Scrunchie to come back.

HAH! DH said the same thing--the lack of ring. It's obvious she knows about the side pieces, or assumes SOMETHING is going on. And maybe she and Rust get too close, maybe that's the blowout? That she's trying to "fix him" and things get too close for Marty?

I am not buying that Rust is at all the killer, I feel like he's the one that knows they got the wrong guy, and he just gave up and walked away knowing that he was never going to get anyone to take his word for anything around there. But I do see that the writers are working on building that case up for the viewer.

I'm getting into it. I had a hard time looking at McConaughey (sp?) the entire first episode, he was so gaunt I didn't even think it was him at times.

I like the build of the relationship between Harrelson and McConaughey---they are such different characters and clearly go in different directions. I wonder what will happen as they work together to solve the case and then what happens in the intervening years.

I can't figure out if McConaughey's character is in jail in the present or if he's really hit bottom???

His acting has become pretty contrived (or was it always?). I found myself thinking of the show today. It's interesting how thin MM was in the pilot too. I think it must've filmed during Dallas Buyers Club. (Sorry. It's hard it articulate my thoughts on my iPad)

It looks like they both have chaw in their lip at various times, because MM has had a look like that a few times also.

We felt like MM was maybe in an institution possibly. But this past episode he said something about quitting, going off to live in the country, and working in or spending all day in a bar.

Just watched the first 2 episodes with my dh and we love it. Looking forward to more episodes. With shows like these I wish I had the willpower to just TIVO them all and then watch the whole season at once but sadly I don't. We are doing that with Breaking Bad right now on netflix (but not by choice because I never got a chance to catch it when it was live) and near the end of season 3 and we watch hours of it at a time. Another great show.

Just gotta say those 90's ties are killing me. But long live the scrunchie.

We couldn't identify who that was...but that makes sense. We wonder if he's being "tested" to see how audiences like him. Multiple roles in multiple series to see if he can handle his own.

Most of the questions seem to about MM when WH is being interviewed. WH doesn't seem to be putting MM in a bad light, in fact he praises him alot for being a good detective. I think this about the MM character at this point.

We know MM was institutionalized for a while. I think someone else was killed and they reopen the case. These are the new detectives. Its a bit slow for me, but i like it anyway.

I originally thought he was in jail or an institution as well. However in a few scenes he pulls a knife out of his pocket and cuts up a beer can. Definitely wouldn't be possible for him to carry weapons as an inmate or psych patient.

Good point Elliot. He speaks about his future(MM) so I wonder if he is already exonerated, but no release yet. Of course he may be an auto mechanic in that outfit. The knife does put another aspect to the plot. N0 he couldn't be a prisoner.

Well they've done a great job with it. And they are doing great with social media too--they have a True Detective Twitter Account (@TD_HBO I think?) and then set one up for Rustin and Marty too. Fascinating move. I think there is also an Instagram account for the show as well.
