Anyone do their own keratin hair straightening?

I did yesterday. It came out well but, uuugh, hard chemicals to tolerate. Teary & burn-y eyes & a bit caustic to the nose. Yes, I know to do it somewhere well ventilated, etc. Now, I can't "wash" this nasty stuff out for 2 days? Eeesh. I used Rejuvenol, 24 hour, from Amazon. Does anyone use one they like well enough & is tolerable? I don't know how the hair dressers can work with this for a living. Thanks.

I just use an iron because I can't tolerate a lot of products. You know that a lot of keratin hair straightening products have been linked to cancer causing chemicals? :knockout:

Every time I did a keratin straightener my BFF would say to me, "you're going to get cancer and DIE!" And I'd respond, "yeah, but I'll be a pretty corpse with straight hair!" :lol:

Haven't had a treatment in years and now use a GHD flat iron. I'll be honest, I miss the keratin treatment because of how soft it made my hair. I'll be paying attention to this thread so I can see what works for whom!

Arkieb1, this is probably too personal so I won't be offended AT ALL if you choose not to answer (and I hope that you aren't offended by my asking), but I think I recall from other threads that you have an Asian parent? Is your hair very curly or wavy? I ask because I have quite a few friends with an Asian parent or who are parenting a child with an Asian parent and they all, without exception, comment on (and sometimes lament!) how straight their (or their kids') hair is! I've never "met" someone with an Asian parent who needs/wants to straighten their hair, hence my surprise (and curiosity). You really don't have to answer this, but I would appreciate learning something new. :)

Hi Trekkie,

My mother is Chinese. But I have part Aboriginal from her side in there. My father is half English (was born in Stamford) and half Scottish. A lot of my English relations have flaming red, thick, messy hair.

I am what you would call a very odd mix. I have insanely course hair (not the typically fine wispy hair most Asian women have) which looks like it has been loosely curled when wet. Add humidity or a dryer and you have slightly fuzzy thick dark brown hair (with a slightly red sort of undertone). My hair is more fuzzy than frizzy.

My skin has a yellow undertone (from the Asian side) but I have very pale (one to two shades better than snow white but yellow based not blue based - so warm tones not cool tones) freckly skin. Basically English skin that burns to a crisp covered in freckles with the hint of the yellow/warm tone underpinning it.

If you look half way down page 50 you will see fuzzy hair and pale skin in the pics;

You're gorgeous! Thank you for your detailed response. I'm also mixed - My mom was Xhosa, Bushman and Scots, my dad is a plain ol' white Englishman. I have very curly hair that never quite does what is expected of it, but I think I'm getting used to it now! :)

Ok, will stop derailing your thread now sonomacounty! Please come back and let us know how it looks after having washed it!

Well, it came out pretty well. It got it's first "wash" today, thank goodness! I didn't blow dry it or iron it, just ran a comb through it every so often as it air-dried as I went out doing errands. It is not super straight but it is less wavy, very soft, lots less frizzy and pretty shiny. I'm quite happy with it but two days of living with what felt like toxic hair wasn't the best. Thanks for asking.

Some derailing never bothers me, btw. It's nice to see people "talking" & being friendly!
