Looking for a gift for an elderly person. Mostly for surfing the internet and watching movies. So I'm thinking screen has to be decent, and the sound has to be decent. Wi-fi only would be OK, since they are mostly home.

I'm not looking to spend too much...$100-175 range...anybody own a tablet in this price range they like, or know which one might be the one to look at?

(I see many OS don't support flash...which is annoying (I don't want them to have to deal with videos not playing...) So I'm wondering if this makes Windows my only option? (I know there are "workarounds" to flash in Android and Apple...so if you're using one of those workarounds without a problem let me know.)

I  my Google nexus 7 purchased over a year ago. That version is $159 on new egg.com

I bought one for my mom as well. She can zoom in on text, play solitaire, etc. Newegg also has cheap faux leather cases too.

Thanks Pinto!

Are you sure we don't have the same mom  those are additional things I'd want to know she can do, zoom in on text and play solitaire!

I second this. In terms of a budget tablet, you can't do much better.
The new ones are 250, so you might want to spend the bit extra to have the lates version.

Have you considered a used iPad from ebay? I have a generation 1, that I love. Wifi and cellular, but wifi only are going for about $100. I only use the cellular when we are going on road trips and I need the directions. You can buy the cellular time on a one week only basis, so no contract needed.

I suggest an iPad because they have a free kindle app (plus billions of other free apps on the apple store) that enables you to download free ebooks from your public library. I love it, I can make the type huge and I read about 5 books a month for free.

I third this, I think iPads are super easy to use!

thanks blackprophet, iLander, lovebug and AprilBaby.

I had not even considered and iPad because of the price point...but didn't realize they'd sell them on Ebay. The only thing that would worry me about that is that since it's a gift I'd like to have some guarantee with it...so I'm leaning towards something new (although I did see plenty of used/refurbished units on Walmart.com).
