Any advice on the following JA diamond?

Hi there, I have been hunting for a diamond for my girlfriend’s engagement ring on a comfort fit platinum six prong setting with size 5 (she has smallish fingers so she already mentioned nothing big!).

I think I have settled for the following:

The GIA report gives the following info (I requested this from the assistant at JA) but I can’t upload the report so I copied this below -

Table - 56%

Depth - 62.3%

Crown Angle - 35 degrees

Pavilion Angle - 40.8 degrees

Cut - Excellent

Polish - Excellent

Symmetry - Excellent

Fluorescence - None

Characteristic - Cloud

5.29 x 5.31 x 3.30

What do you think about this diamond?

Not completely thrilled with the one you posted. A few questions...

- Does it have to be JA? Can you work with BN that provides reports without asking?
- Does it have to be None for fluorescence or is Faint ok too (FYI...Faint should be fine).

Hi tyty333, thanks for this. May I ask why you’re not thrilled? (So I can learn what’s good/bad :))

It doesn’t have to be JA but it’s nice that they have the detailed magnification which Blue Nile doesn’t have.

How does fluorescence influence appearance of the diamond? I have been searching ‘none’ for all my searches because I think I read that it can make a diamond look cloudy.
 
What’s your exact budget, if I may ask? I can see the price of the own you posted. Is your budget exactly that?

Hi motowanmama. Of course :) the budget is around £1500-£2000 ($1900-$2500)
 
The diamond you posted is a bit deeper than optimal, so you’re paying for diamond weight that won’t be seen. It may also cause it to not look it’s best in some lighting situations. My diamond is 62.2 depth so I’m speaking from experience .

Hi mwilliamanderson, thanks that’s helpful to know. So eseentially paying too much money for little spread, if that’s the right term? Does that mean it won’t sparkle?

No, I'm saying that this is a discussion to have with your future fiance bc her idea and your idea of small may be different. And that the linked website could help you guys visualize.

It will sparkle in certain lighting but in lower light it may appear darker in the center.

Ah sorry @PintoBean , I was being silly! Yes, I have discussed this in the past and she mentioned she prefers a sparkly diamond that is smaller than a dull on which is big. The tool you suggested is helpfu.

This ring is meant to be a surprise to I am taking a stab in the dark!

In regards to proportions and light return based the videos, both are comparable to each other. You will need the idealscope images to confirm this. But the F is cheaper, bigger, spreadier, and whiter.

Thanks @flyingpig - so it would be daft to go for the first diamond? Another stupid question - the first diamond only had "cloud" as a characteristic while this diamond has a longer list with "crystal, needle, pinpoint" - what does this influence the sparkle?

It can still be a surprise but I still suggest having the discussion. Say she wants to buy you a car. Even if it will be a surprise gift, wouldn't you want some input, like, economy size sedan or pick up truck?
 
Clarity chacteristics in a VS1 do not really matter. VS1 is almost always eye cleans and mind clean. It is a good choice that you are considering G+ and VS1+. You do not want to return the diamond from the UK because you (and your SO) are not happy with color or clarity. It will be costly and a hassle.

And yes, the F is my choice based on the videos, reports, and pricing shown here.

That is a beautiful stone.

You should certainly put that on hold if you like it and ask for an ideal scope. Ask them to do a gemologist review! Lots of lurkers!

Carat size is very personal so it is hard to say. I am a 4.25 with a 0.8 carat. I didn't mind a lower clarity and colour but I agree with flyingpig that F/g vs1 is a safe choice

Agreed. When she said "smaller stone" she might have been imagining .75ct, so its really important to know what she considers a "small" diamond

Agreed...I’m a 3.25-3.5 and I prefer a small stone myself but the smallest size I wanted for me was .70.

Granted carat size is a very personal preference and her minimum might be much different but maybe it would help if you both knew...?

Thanks for your suggestions - I have discreetly asked her about her preference. She has said that something half the size of the rubber tip on a pencil -I held a pencil next to her finger when asking :). What sort of carat size would we be looking at? Happy to up the budget!

Thanks for this! So I guess I am on the right track! I was looking at the 6 prong setting on JA but I am not a big fan as the prongs look rather big (or is that me being silly!?!). On the other hand, the 6 prong setting at Blue Nile looks slimmer.

So any recommended diamonds on Blue Nile just over 0.5ct? I am a bit worried about Blue Nile as the magnification is less. Thanks in advance!

Blue nile is fine. James Allen settings are, IMO, better. However, I know they haven't been able to get the handmade six prong due to COVID. The blue nile settings that say "special order" are the ones fitted to the stone. Their petite nouveau solitaire is nice and would be what I would go with from them for the 6 prong basic setting style.
 
Which setting are you looking at on JA...which one on BN?

Edit...I really like the stone @flyingpig posted.

I loved being surprised by my ER. I get that’s a minority view on here - the woman will wear something for rest of her life etc - but it’s one of my most fond life memories. Just puttin that out there for what it’s worth.
