Hello, I need some help.

I was looking at oval diamonds online several weeks ago with a budget of approx $4k. I found several good choices, but ended up using a dealer used by a few friends because his price was comparable to online and he came well reviewed.

Fast forward to today. I just receive the ring and the stone, while similar, is a different one than we agreed upon. I am proposing today (and cant change it) and dont want to have to switch the diamond after the fact if i don't have to. Can you tell me what, if any, difference in value you think there is between these two stones?

That said, the one i received is still eye clean and a nice looking stone, but i want to make sure I'm not getting cheated.

Both are 1.00ct I SI1 GIA rated. Main differences are girdle, flouresence, and many more inclusions noted on the GIA plot.

Stone 1 GIA 6157692537(the one i agreed on)

Depth - 60.5
Table - 59
Girdle - thin-thick
Polish - VG
Symm - VG
Flour - None
Clarity Char - Crystal

Stone 2 GIA 5166249062 (the one i received)

Depth - 59.3
Table - 55
Girdle - Very thin- Very thick
Polish - EX
Symm - EX
Flour - FAINT
Clarity Char - Crystal, Twinning Wisp, Cloud, Feather, Indented Natural, Natural
Comments - Additional twinning wisps, additional clouds, pinpoints and surface graining are not shown.

Thank you so much for your help

How do you know it's a different stone?

The GIA cert he included with the stone when it was mailed is different than the one we agreed upon. I have the original saved in an email

Can you take it immediately to get the diamond confirmed to see if it matches that report number? Take it to SOMEONE ELSE.

You might need to postpone the proposal if it doesn't because that's to me a big deal, and frankly, that would be a reason for me to return the whole ring and start over elsewhere. You have no idea what you were sold. You have no idea if that diamond is either of the stones you're describing.

Ditto. It is either an error of sending the wrong GIA report, or he has been dishonest. I'd be finding out which report the diamond matches, and if it is not the diamond you originally selected, then RETURN it and start over! I would postpone a proposal for a couple of weeks if necessary.

I am assuming you saw this diamond and selected it. Is that correct? Because there are a LOT of not-so-great ovals out there, and they cannot be selected by a GIA report.

Oh, and is the stone set in a halo setting? because I would never consider a stone with a very thin girdle unless it was in a bezel or halo. They can chip more easily.

Wow. Sorry this happened, but I would not want to deal with this vendor. :nono: Postpone the proposal and use someone else -- you may not get the right stone for the report, regardless if you remain with current jeweler.

Update:
I went to jeweler next to my office at lunch. They confirmed the stone indeed matches the 2nd GIA cert.

I talked to my jeweler and it sounds like an honest mix-up since both stones are similar. They have my original stone in stock still and have offered to fix the situation and send me the original stone if i choose.

I can't postpone because her parents are flying in today as a surprise for after i propose. A little impromptu engagement party. So i will propose with this ring and take the weekend to think about what to do.

I found historical pricing online (from b2c and adiamor) and it seems when they were listed on those sites they were both within about $100 of each other (and the same amount i actually paid). So i don't think i was duped. But i guess i need to think about it.

Thank you for your help and suggestions

Wow, that would tick me off! You did not agree to that stone, bottom line. Whether it was an accident or not is another story. I would propose and then get the diamond switched.

Go ahead and propose then later tell your girlfriend what happened. Go together to look at the other stone and pick the one you
want. That would be my suggestion. Sorry it happened.
