Antique funny brooch with a range of different old cuts

My newest internet find I purchased out of sheer curiosity: a brooch with a range of tiny old cut diamonds (test as) from rose cuts (one as high as a mountain) to what looks like old mine cuts to, what I find quite intriguing, some that look like a pre version of emerald cuts, perfectly rectangular. All set in some sort of closed silver baskets (took me some effort to clean, was quite dark) with a gold bottom. What an interesting piece, I’m glad I finally bought it after at first I didn’t really give it a second glance.
What are your thoughts? 22FEBCAF-E261-4839-BAFB-D5CCB483E505.jpeg E23CC60B-93D2-43B4-9557-53086C2947D7.jpeg 31218A1E-F09C-421E-A7B5-9B13F4CF35B6.jpeg D5C7A1BD-2211-47D0-A50A-E02C5B85EA2E.jpeg 3E7308D6-5B83-4CB8-BD60-8710FB7375F6.jpeg F3783005-6E64-43F3-9FB9-3E3323E60C04.jpeg CD6A598C-71E7-48AB-B0ED-B757BC3CF9CE.jpeg

Do you think the “emerald” cuts are replacements? Or do you know of such a type of old cuts?

Can you show the entire back? I'm thinking this may have been a buckle converted to a brooch.

I’m away for the weekend but will send pictures as soon as possible. What I can say: the brooch is bent, but “upwards” right and left hand. And the gold bottom with the pin was added later. It’s “newer”.

Looks like you may have some table cut diamonds - lots of images and info online - a very early cut - Great find

It looks at least very similar. The stones are small, so it’s difficult to tell. But oh so interesting!

I wonder if it had once been a Buckle?
It's lovely!

I was wondering the same thing - that might account for the upward bend Rosalina mentioned.

What a beautiful and unusual piece.
So versatile! You could wear this with anything!
Do I see a loop for hanging? I think this piece has been a buckle, a necklace and a pin in it's many former lives.

I think this is a very old (maybe 18th c) buckle that was converted to a brooch in the 19th c, and repaired in the 20th c with a new clasp. The tiny loop is for a chain with a safety pin to make sure it doesn't get lost, and was probably added when it was converted to a brooch. The gold backing might have been original, or it might have been added at the time of conversion to protect the wearer's clothing from silver tarnish. It's a fantastic piece and you're a lucky lady!

Amazing Wow Wow! My 1850 earrings are similar in the metal colors and condition as well as the mixing of some cuts in the cluster. The centers are pink OMCs. I too have early emerald cuts and no they are not exactly table cuts they look sort of like a mix of cushion and emerald. I adore your piece. Wow!

@roseli may i ask you how did you clean it ? It looks so nice . I bought a foiled back brooch also and i am scared to clean it ,i don't even know where to start. I hear that we must avoid water with foiled back

Sorry for my late answer. I cleaned it with a silver polish (not liquid, some sort of a cream). Very carefully but it worked.

Thank you for responding, can yoi give me the name / brand of the product? I want to buy the exact same thing because yours looks sooo shinny and brandnew . Here is a picture of my brooch so you know why i am asking. It's very very very dark. 20211102_234813.jpg

It‘s called Twinkle silver polish. I‘m Europe based so I hope it exists overseas. I like the patina on yours! It‘s a beautiful piece!
