kcoursolle,
Hi and thanks!

Please keep the pics coming. They are for a birthday project.

You want real antiques, very good reproductions of antiques, or any stone with a "blocky" or "chunky" appearance that usually passes for antique-like around here?

BostonJeff,
Is that your fiance''s diamond?
Hi Harriet,

No, that is not my fiance''s stone. It was a stone I came across early in my search that convinced me I wanted a antique-style cushion. I believe that the stone is an actual antique, and it is about 3.50 carats. I just think it is a fantastic stone-- the only thing I would change is the overall shape-- I wish it were a little less oval.

What do you fellas think of this stone? http://www.artofplatinum.com/4images/details.php?image_id=362
Can''t see too much of it in that picture, and the pictures do not load for me when I follow the link. From what I can see, it looks to have a high crown and a small table, which is a nice start-- it is really hard to tell exactly what the faceting pattern is.

Darn. I hope Leon uploads the pictures again.

These folks do one of my favorite cushion styles, modern with old characteristics like tall crown/small table and a bit of an open culet, and a much sexier outline (to me at least) than the more square-sided square-cornered moderns. Many of their stones also have less weight in the bottom than a real antique and therefore reasonable spread, even with the extra crown height.

Are you recutting from an existing polished stone or from rough? If a polished stone you already have, it will determine to a great extent what you will end up with unless yield is unimportant and money is no object. I had one like this cut from a modern but had to find the right starting material...and still lost 18% weight.

If your cutter has a stone in hand very similar to what you want, it may be better than working from photos.

Oooh, Elmo, what a beauty! Apologize for the threadjack but did you have that cut by Paul Slegers like you recommended in my earlier custom cushion post? Lovely stone!!!

To clarify, that image is from an advertisement of the supplier (sightholder). I have one of their stones and needed another one like it. Paul's schedule was so far out due to the holidays that he didn't do this for me, and I'm not sure whether he's in a position to do this now. I think it's worth asking him though, for a number of reasons...a good guy, a good dealer network, access to rough, ability to execute well. But I expect that Harriett probably has someone local to her (NYC).

This is one of my favorites.

Elmo,
Those are the characteristics I want! My cutter will be working with rough.

Ellen,
Is that ring yours?

Yes, that''s the ring I inherited early from my mom.

Bad close-up of my OMC. (Though Boston_Jeff''s picture just made my heart skip a beat!)

Ellen,
Yes, dear.

Hest,
Thanks! An open culet it shall be.
