So is there a separate gym for those who need to monitor their weight or do they use this one as well.

And I keep hearing about buying that $10 scale.

When are some of you going to get that is not the point, and you know it.

Ruby, I have to admit, I'm starting to worry about you. Here in Canada (like everywhere else that has a free market economy) we have these things called "gyms." They are everywhere. So are stores that sell scales. Most Canadian homes own one, and many homes have more than one. Students pay to go to that gym facility at the university. This means that they can choose to pay to go to any other facility if they don't like the way that this one is run. AND because our health care is free (well, not really, given that it's paid for through our tax dollars, but we don't pay out of pocket for a single medical appointment), we could even choose to abuse the medical system and make an appointment EVERY SINGLE DAY if we wanted to, just so we could be weighed at our doctor's office. Of course, I'm sure that the nurses/doctors would eventually tell us to go home and stop wasting their time and taxpayer dollars because THERE IS NO HEALTH BENEFIT TO THIS, but legally, no-one could actually stop us from doing that. But you know what, a $20 scale at home is just more convenient. Because you can get into a routine of getting up, going to the bathroom, and then weighing yourself without clothes on which gives the most accurate result if you really want to track your weight in a consistent way over time.

And for people who don't want to pay to go to a gym (or can't), there are free mall walking programs (because it's little chilly here to walk outside in the winter), free community centers with athletic facilities, skating rinks that are free to use, swimming pools that are free to use, the YMCA which offers full gym and pool services for a minimal fee, all of which will probably have a scale in them for personal use.

What are you getting at by fake Peanut butter sandwich? I thought you were asking how it worked in the schools during lunch time or when someone brought in treats to share with the class.
No. Many schools have banned all nut products for their childs lunches. They've now started to ban pretend peanut products, ie sunbutter, wowbutter, all of those. They pose 0 risk to kids with peanut allergies, but they look like PB. So we are treating the peanut allergy kids like snowflakes, who can't handle seeing someone else eat a pretend PB sandwich, but you think that's ok because it's an allergy (even though sunbutter wouldn't impact them at all). But you make a huge deal about 1 school in a different country removing a scale, and 1 student mentioned it's a good thing for people with EDs, and call them snowflakes. It's just a disconnect on what you think is important.

As I said, EDs are diagnosed illnesses. I'd think you, considering how much time you spent harping on diabetes in this thread, would be more compassionate to someone else suffering.

I had a personal trainer a few years ago and she told me to worry more about being able to fit into your jeans than the number on the scale. On top of that, at the time I was a manic about weighing myself every morning and I do not have an eating disorder but it is easy to become obsessive about these things.

There are plenty of stores where you can go buy a scale, it's not a necessity of life like food and water, nobody is going to kick the bucket because they don't have access to a scale.

StephanieLynn, you answered your own question. The point of this thread was to incite a reaction. Success! Some people knit to pass the time, some engage in internet discourse. James Taylor sang "the secret of life is enjoying the passage of time." This thread is an example of how we are all enjoying? killing? time.

Maria, have you posted the same about the 40 page Trump tweet thread? Hypocrite much.

But again, I,I,I. It is not all about you. It is there for those who want to use it, but no one is forcing you to do so.

Ruby, I did not use the word "I" once in the response that you quoted - I did not think this thread was all about me. I believe it is all about you, actually. I can see you are having (your idea of) fun, and I am glad for that. Is the Trump tweet thread all about you too? I haven't read all of it. Would you like me to post something there with which you can "enjoy the passage of time?" What kind of thing would suit you best? You've already called me a hypocrite so you might be bored with that.

Like you, I am snowed in with this blizzard, so I've got some time on my hands. I'mg going to exercise in my home gym and then probably weigh myself, but after that I'm happy to keep you entertained! :P

I am posting this because I am standing up for a chronic condition and why I have the need to weigh myself. Remember, this discussion started yesterday before the snow.

But once again you are making a mockery out of a very serious health condition,

And so glad you can afford your own home gym. We peasants are waiting for it to clear so we can get to the gym and walk the track.

But until then, I have monitored my blood pressure, glucose level, and am monitoring my steps to try to reach 10,000 even though I am housebound until the weather clears.

Please don't be jealous of my home gym; it consists of a set of 5,8,10 & 15 pound dumbbells, some resistance bands, a yoga mat and a medicine ball. I think all of it probably cost less than $150. (I do have a gym membership, but my gym closed at noon today.) My scale is pretty impressive though - it has bluetooth and uploads data to my FitBit app. I too am trying to reach 10,000 today - I'm at 6000 so far. Not bad for not having gone out save to take out/bring in the trash.

I am kind of obsessed about my weight. I weigt myself every morning and right before I go to bed. I don't feel it is detrimental to my mental health as the number doesn't impact my feelings of self-esteem - I just like to know what the number is.

Anyway - I am not making a mockery out of your physical health issues. Sorry, but I actually don't really care about them. Just like you probably don't care much what my body fat percentage is. I wish I could tell you what it was, because I like numbers, but I don't trust what my scale says it is because I think the technology it uses is bunk. Hmmm, maybe my scale isn't that impressive.

If I am mocking anything, it is the way we are all entertaining ourselves here in this thread. It is an entertainment that I too am taking part in so that would make me a victim of my own mocking.

Hey, we have two things in common today - trying to get 10,000 steps and enjoying being victims!

Me, a victim, hardly. I have diabetes but I am doing everything I can to keep it under control.

So if whatever happens in the future, I know I did everything I could not to be a victim to the disease and its complications.

This must be something new as I am not familiar with that product.

And are you comparing children with so called adults?

Harping on diabetes, is that how you see it? Where is your compassion?

CMD, I do not know how much plainer I can make it. Ideas spread. So tomorrow will they be doing the same thing in the US.

And what you have in Canada now as far as healthcare, we do not have in the US. So it is immaterial. And all the more reason we in the US have to monitor alot of it ourselves because with my insurance if I go to the doctor one day before I am able to, I have to pay for it.

And again, those cheap scales are practically useless. I like the one in my gym that is just like the one on the doctor's office. I can assure you that if you want good quality, it will cost more than $20.

And stop with the passive aggressive of worrying about me.

At least Maria is 100% hones,t we are strangers and she does not lose sleep over me anymore then I do over her.

harp
verb
1. talk or write persistently and tediously on a particular topic.

You've made 10 posts in this this thread specifically about diabetes. I would call that persistently for sure, and yes, it's sure getting tedious. Especially when it has nothing to do with the topic lol.

Wait. Now gyms MUST HAVE PARTICULARLY EXPENSIVE SCALES BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE THE CHEAP ONES?! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahaha

If you don't see how ridiculous that is (especially given that a million people have told you how weight/BMI isn't helpful for tracking diabetes), I'm not sure what else to say.

Apparently we can blame Canada!

At my gym now and they don't have scales. The front desk person says they never have.

I am giving you the benefit of the doubt Love, but I am beginning to wonder.

The scale was already there. Leave it alone.

The cheap scales are the ones you people are saying we should already have in our bathrooms.

A million people, or you same 5 women.

Against my endocrinologist.

But, but, how do people stay healthy if they know not what they weigh?

I don't remember ever seeing a scale at my women's only gym back in the 2000's. In college, don't remember seeing a scale anywhere in the building. Here we have a chain of gyms whose philosophy/tag line is "a judgment free zone." They have a no scale policy.

This university did not set some precedent by getting rid of a scale. And Ruby, looks like the snowflakes have already infiltrated, and YOUR SCALE IS NEXT. :o

Ruby,

Is there some reason that you come across so bitter and sarcastic? Is it the thrill is upsetting someone or are you just that angry at life?

Just to clarify this is not an attack, I have just not encountered this amount of sarcastic ugly banter in a thread before. I also have never had someone launch an all out attack like you did, so I'm just curious.

It also fits the pattern of diversion/coping. Comparing apples to....strawberry seeds? :cheeky:

As for the OP, it's all been said, but yes, much ado about nothing. It was the university's/program's decision, as is their right, and they said they're open to other options depending on feedback from people actually involved with the program. Scandalous!

Why would they be mutually exclusive. I can multi task.

Ruby, it's Canada. The scale will be back within a week, and everyone will apologize, I can almost guarantee it. The students did not complain to have it removed. After all this attention, it's highly likely it will be put back. But never fear, even if it's not, there are other scales available on campus.

I am a diabetic too. My weight is only closely monitored by my rheumatologist, since the remicade infusions I get require exact dosing, like CMD said. So I get weighed in front of a bunch of people no less, every 6 weeks. If I lose more than 5 lbs, I have to have a dose adjustment, which is a big pain. We also have 2 scales at home.

My endocrinologist does not closely monitor my weight. He only uses it to get a rough estimate for my medications. They do not need to be as precise as say a dose of remicade. My weight is stable, as is my diabetes.

My grandfather lost both legs to Type 2 diabetes. He was underweight his entire life. There are skinny and average weight diabetics out there. It's not all about weight, that's just the stigma attached to the disease. I'm sorry that your diabetes is different than mine, that you have to be super strict, and I don't have to be. People with diabetes vary.

My health, knock on wood, is good. I'm very lucky because I can't say that I particularly deserve it. I'm not one of those people who can claim to have had a healthy lifestyle all their life. I didn't start exercising until I was 25. Before that I was a total couch potato. I've never played a sport, smoked cigarettes until age 27, cycled from normal to overweight from 25 to 45. I always ate well, no junk food, just too much healthy food. I was never too much into drinking but had my fair share of marijuana (started that up again recently, but now it's legal). I worry about colon cancer, which runs in my family.

I try to get my 10,000 in every day. I am motivated by tracking numerical quantities. So counting calories consumed, calories burned, steps taken, keeps me going.

I'm now at 9985 - but I've got one hour and 8 minutes to get in 15 steps - I can do it! :D

CMD, I do not know how much plainer I can make it. Ideas spread. So tomorrow will they be doing the same thing in the US.

My goodness, yes I certainly hope so! At least when it's something that might improve people's health, happiness, and well being. And I hope you keep this in mind every time you try to defend the less savory ideas being spread by certain prominent members of your leadership.

But I doubt you need to worry. This is a single gym in a sparcely populated and politically insignificant country. It's not a government policy nor is it likely to spread to your neck of the woods in your lifetime. Hoards of apologetic scale-stealing Canadians are not descending upon you to very politely request the removal of all scales everywhere! And if we are being really honest, this started as a dismissive post about a nonexistent group of whiney millennials who couldn't allegedly cope with being confronted by the harsh realities of body weight (ahem *fake news!*), not as a realistic threat to your personal health. You are free to choose to follow the advice given or not. If your personal gym takes away your scale, you can always stage a revolt. Organize a protest. Picket. Vote with your wallet and go somewhere else that has gloriously large and beautifully appointed gym scales. Start a go-fund-me page. Write your member of congress. Demand it as an amendment to your constitution as an inalienable right to a bathroom scale. You have a voice! You are woman hear you roar!!! (Unless 1950's you has popped too much Valium to care).

And what you have in Canada now as far as healthcare, we do not have in the US. So it is immaterial.

Ummm...I might be going crazy here, but I was pretty sure you asked. You said:

So is there a separate gym for those who need to monitor their weight or do they use this one as well....

So I was just telling you what the other options might look like for those poor, sad, downtrodden students who miss their scale.

Plus, if you'd have just voted for Bernie, you could have had universal health care too. Instead you've got cheeto pulling "repeal and not replace" from what I can tell. I'm just saying....

(If I'm being serious for a moment, I have to admit that I feel for people without insurance. It must be terrifying, and I don't understand why so many of you don't rise up and demand better from those you elect to run your country. AFAIK, the US is the only G7 country that doesn't care for the basic health care needs of its citizenry).
