Hi PSers,

Please let me know if $6500 is a fair price for a 1.5 carat cushion brilliant, specs below.

Carat - 1.5
Color - K
Clarity - VS2
Measurements- 8.3 x 7.5 x 3.1mm

I had asked the jeweler to search for cushions under 6k and he sent me the above. I'm not able to find anything with that large of a spread within the 1.5 carat range so I'm wondering - is this actually a good price?

TIA!

8.3 x 7.5 x 3.1 for 1.5c??
Is this even possible? That's like 41.3% depth

Hi flyingpig,

Is 41% depth a negative?

What's ideal for that carat size?

I cannot even image what a cushion cut diamond with 41% depth looks like. There are over 37000 cushion diamonds available from PS database. Only 4 diamonds have depths less than 45%. I guess such shallow diamond will have significant leakage or obstruction problem or both.

Cushion depths are usually in the upper 60% range...41% is way shallow and is bound to have some issues (I would think).

1.5 for $6k would be tough.
Are you looking for square or rectangular?

What color/clarity range? If you move down to "I" with low clarity you might be able to find something
in the 1.5 range (with appropriate depth).

Okay with going to L color, eye clean, square.

So what I'm gathering is the shallow depth will have light return issues?

Yes. A 41% depth is very negative. Cushions certainly can vary, but 60-70% is more common. With such a shallow depth, the diamond would be expected to be dull and grey with poor light return -- but with a huge spread as the balance. Also, cushions are very poor at hiding color, so it is recommended that you look at H+ (G even better) unless you know the indended wearer is ok with a lot of color.

Concur with depth but wanted to place in some input. I have an 8 Main cushion brilliant in K. It shows very little tint to me. Is it a warm white? Yes. But I have only seen a yellowish tint a few times from the side in tan colored rooms. And it’s in a platinum halo with f-g melee so plenty of white metal/cooler diamonds to contrast with. I think the amount of color it will show depends on the cut of the stone and also whether it is a brilliant or chunky cut vs crushed ice. I do think $6500 is doable in a K-L (maybe even a J) for 1.5ct but it may take some searching and/or waiting for one to pop up with a great cut.
