Alexander stone?

I inherited my grandmother''s ring. My mom said that it''s an Alexander stone but I can''t seem to find any information about it. It changes from purple to blue and sometimes green, depending on the lighting. I''ll try to post a picture tonight but in the meantime, does anyone have any idea what stone this could be? Thanks!

Alexandrites are highly sought after - and can cost more per carat than a diamond. How drastic is the colour change? We''d love to see pics of it!
