Hello all,

I have purchased a diamond ring from Blue Nile and wonder if I made a good choice.
Can you please advise if it has any substantial light leakage or mushy / dead areas? Is the strong fluor causing any oiliness? Is the bow tie too prominent?
Overall how does it perform?

It won't let me attach the GIA report here but you can download on the web page.

Many thanks for your help

I will let @tyty333 (she shows what to look for in an oval in other oval threads and I study to learn from her) comment on performance. However have you seen a J color oval? I ask because I had Mark T source and send me an I color oval and I wear Js in the 7.8mm size. This shape really shows it’s color, the center was white and flashed with dark (bowtie) but the other areas showed quite a bit of tint. You can see in my previous threads I post about oval settings BUT I returned it with a restocking fee. This was just my experience so I thought I would share. It may work in rose gold though! Good luck on your hunt :)

Hi Fancyjems,

Thank you for your reply.

I have not seen a proper diamond up close, ever. I haven't received my order yet, which is actually my engagement ring, hence why I wanted some professional advice on it.

I have read some threads on here of experts talking about mushy areas on shoulders and bow ties on the belly. Since my eye isn't an expert one I thought somebody here would outh to give me the load down on the performance of this diamond.

I am not concerned about the J colour, it's set in yellow gold band.
The flour concerns me as it has devided opinions on the web.

Blue Nile could not provide ASET etc or any further information about the diamond performance due to Covid 19 and suppliers being shut. They said it's good value for money and it has minimal bow tie 3 on the scale of 5. Also that it's not hazy or oily. That the strong Florescence tends to improve low grade colours like J.

I have asked other experts online and nobody could tell me any better. Some said the colour could be better and others couldn't say much unless they compare it to another diamond.

Go figure.

Look at the Elyque ovals they are ideal cut stones and show you what to look for in a oval.

Our oval “experts” explain in this thread what to look for.

I don't know, these diamonds are deep cut. I guess it minimises the bow tie / maximises light return, but then surely compensates for something else like the ratio and dimensions for its carat size.

I watched the video of the new brilliant ovals line eliminating bow ties and light leakage, by the same guy that has tons of videos by good old gold on U-tube.

Too bad I can't shop from us sites due to extra charges on duty, otherwise James Allen would have been my preferred choice.

These are the best cut ovals on the market for maximizing performance. The depth allows for zero bowtie or "mush"

I’m not going to lie I highly dislike the video images that BN uses but these would be ones I would look at

This one jumps out at me

This one has nice big facets, different flavor then most ovals on the market so it’s going to be unique

I love how this one was cut but it’s questionable due to the cavity and the inclusion on the table

Hi KKJohnson,

I agree the videos aren't as good as James Allen's.

Can you have a look at this one please:

Is it worth the money? It has extra facet.
I'd go low on colour to max the size.

I have a rule of thumb that I try and follow, if you question your purchases then it’s not the right one for you and that goes doubly so for jewelry.

I suggested the others because I wasn’t thrilled with the one you got, it does have some mush and I felt you get a better cut

Also when maximizing size don’t look at carat weight, the dimensions are what are important

The cut on this one looks decent but I would be hesitant to go down to a J in an oval because the areas that do not reflect light as well
will show a lot of color/tint. Do you have easy returns to bluenile where you are at in case you are not happy with the tint?

I was wondering why this J colour shows more tint than other J's, because of the mushy areas.
30 days free returns, only have to pay insurance.

I think it's best to see it before I decide if to return it or not. My boyfriend won't be pleased as it's more of a sentimental value than material to him. But I think 5 k is a lot of money to spent on half decent diamond ring. To me it should be as perfect as possible.

Thank you for your honesty I appreciate it.
