Advice on making an offer on the Leon Mege site

Hi. I covet a piece on Leon Mege's site that has been there for a long time so wasn't immediately "snapped up." He has that "make an offer we cannot refuse" option. Has anyone any experience with that? What is a percentage you can offer that won't piss him off but still gets you a good deal? Thanks for any assistance.

A word to the wise....it has been reported on PS he is difficult to work with.

Just be sure you know the value of the item regardless of what the list price is. That should influence your offer price.

Hard to know the "value" since it's not a diamond we can just look up . It's that carved moon face moonstone pendant with the micropave melee around it. I can't even see his asking price yet. I registered and yet still can't log on to the site. Anybody know?

HI:

If he says refuses your offer--in saying "no"--does it mean he is angry? I wouldn't draw that conclusion. But I would agree with Snowdrop that it might be a final sale.

Good luck!

cheers--Sharon

I've been here long enough to know that, lol. He isn't the most pleasant person to deal with.

I’ve registered for the site too but often have trouble getting on- the last time I tried it told me I was banned! Slightly off putting. I really like the 5 stone aqua ring but there’s so little info about the piece I wouldn’t be confident offering for it unless it was a real deal.

Wow that's kind of rude.

Some of these just seem like an excuse to keep your money. Items sold at a discount are almost always final sale at any vendor, jewelry or otherwise. But can't engravings just be buffed out? And if something is back ordered can't he just, like, not make it? Sounds like a cash grab...

I'm able to see the prices by logging in via Firefox (using Safari as my browser didn't work); if you're referring to item #P7320, the price shown is $9720.

Well, the vast majority of jewelers don't accept returns, with refund, of personalized pieces. Blue Nile and James Allen are exceptions in that both of those companies will accept the return of an e-ring that's been engraved (James Allen will deduct a $25 "restocking fee" from the refund). I'm thinking "back-ordered" means it isn't in stock but can be made available at the purchaser's request, i.e., a custom order.

Yikes. I wouldn't offer more than $5 - $5.5k for it. Guess it doesn't hurt to try. His prices are somewhat "aspirational."

Will be interesting to hear his response! Given that it's LM & the fact that there are (in addition to the moonstone and the ruby melee) the 5 rows of micropaved diamonds with total ct weight of 2.76 in the platinum "frame", I actually expected he'd priced it higher. Maybe make the offer for the pendant alone, not including the platinum rolo chain? (He doesn't include the specs for the chain, other than the length, so it's tough to guess what the chain would cost elsewhere.) Good luck!!

P.S. If you've not already estimated the size equivalent, it's a smidge larger (in terms of diameter) than a nickel & about 5 stacked nickels in depth.

Right, I don't want the chain. The nickel thing is exactly what I was thinking about. Anything bigger than that is a medallion imo and I don't like them.

It's been on his site at least 2 years. If he says no, no big deal. If I were him, I would say yes. I doubt he has that much in it even accounting for labor. I get that there's a good bunch of pave there but it's still tiny diamonds.

Oh I agree! Sorry if my post came across as suggesting your offer was unreasonably low.

No offense taken, don't worry. At the 2 year mark, it becomes a matter of recoupment IMO. Maybe not for him.

I believe that making him an offer is a negotiation tactic.. make him an offer that is lower than you would fairly pay.
See if he accepts... if he refuses.. you can always go up.
You can go up.. but you can't go down in these situations.. so start low. I would guess he will start a negotiation if he doesn't agree to it.

Edited... just took a look.. that's a nice piece..

I'd start 50% off with the expectation of a few counter offers back and forth. He's probably reading this as we speak lololol.

I wondered if he reads these boards. Probably does.

The value of the LM piece is primarily in the pave and LM labor/artistry. Here is a sample listing of a carved moonstone (it seems the LM one is higher quality but still, you can use the pricing as reference-- also note that the LM photo and video show the piece against a dark background which amplifies the blue flash of the moonstone):

After reading this thread, I wanted to check out LM's site and boy are there some glaring GLARING issues that I have with the type of customer service offered. Anyone read his price match policy? I was laughing so hard yesterday I started crying!

Also PS gets a really long honorable mention, which had my ROLLING I was laughing so hard. It can be found here: https://www.leonmege.com/leon-mege-experience/leon-mege-consumer-feedback

That's hilarious! OMG I LMAO. Spoken like a true mad artist. Can't believe the site has such crazy rant posted publicly.

Right? Whatever his level of work may be .... his lack of professionalism is truly astounding!
