Hello PS community -

After reading and lurking, this is my first GO at posting.

The amount of expertise amongst all of you gem enthusiasts is IMPRESSIVE. I've been doing some searches and filters on my own of PS as well as independent diamond databases and I'm not really sure what I'm looking at except the best of cuts as well as clarity and color that is within my budget.

First question-

I am searching for the following - 1.8 to 2 carat weight stones with I color and VS2 clarity. Looking for XXX grade and ideal cut with HCA of less than 2. Can the community point me some stones currently on the market that they would potentially be interested in if they were searching within my parameters?

Second question-

My budget was originally 11-12k, but could be more as I'm looking...(keeping fingers crossed for a tax return!) Am I crazy to think that I can find something that fits the bill within my budget?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!!!!

ROCKY B

A little over budget, AGS0 and SI1 (but eye clean).

If you want to venture into J..

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/2.23-carat-j-color-vs2-clarity-ideal-cut-sku-995122 this one is HUGE for the price. It has a brown tint, vs the usual yellow. most people find this undesirable, but it is one of my favourite things. If you set in rose gold, you can sometimes bring out a pinkish tone in the diamond.

That James Allen 2 carat looks really nice! How important is fluorescence? Somebody told me that it causes an oily constantly dirty look, another person claims that fluorescence can enhance a stone that's a bit warmer in color such as the J you've pointed out.

Very Strong fluor combined with a lower clarity (SI1 and lower) CAN cause hazy or milkiness - but this is rare. JA will be able to tell you if this is the case. Fluor CAN make the diamond look a little brighter under UV light, but not always. If you don't mind the tint, I'd put that one on hold and ask the JA gemologist to examine it for you.

eta - here is a recent thread with a J diamond with STRONG fluor. The JA has medium, so it wont be as blue.

I really like that 2.23 carat J VS2. It has an HCA score of 1.6. Might bring it in to take a look in person!

If I were shopping for myself, that is the one I'd choose. But I like the tint and am a size whore

If you do order it, make sure to examine in all sorts of light. You'll see the fluor most on a nice sunny day, but make sure to look at it in unfavourable lighting as well.

eta - I see now that it is unavailable. I hope it was you that snapped it up and not a lurker!

Yes, I was the one that ordered it! I am putting it in an edwardian era style vintage platinum setting with shoulders. not too much of the pavilion will be exposed, so that will help with any warmth. I hope the cut will allow it to perform well within the mounting!

I will definitely share pics of the finished engagement ring! For those who have worked with James Allen in the past or have heard in the grapevine, do they have a good risk free return policy should the stone not work out for you?

The only thing I am concerned about with the 2.23 carat is a darker inclusion, such as a carbon spot. I do see a small inclusion in their 360 magnification and the sales rep from James Allen claimed it would be eye clean, but the location is in the table, and seems pretty shallow from angled views into the pavilion. The thing is, the reason they cannot have a gemologist inspect it is because it is out of the country at this point.

I'm also hoping that the diamond will look fairly white facing up, and the color will not be too noticeable on platinum from the side.

I guess there are things you have to compromise when you're on a tight budget...
