Hello all. I am looking at purchasing a specific diamond from a big chain diamond store in my city . It is a "color-i si1 1.03ct cushion cut" along with a Henry Daussi Mtg. The price that I was given with the mtg made in white gold along with the diamond is 5579.40 after tax (diamond-4,015 and the mtg-1225.) If I want the mtg to be platinum, then it would be 6289.60 after tax (1,895 for the platinum option.) My question to you all is this a great deal? I've been researching diamonds on blue nile and I see other stones on there with the same cut, clarity, color, carat at a cheaper rate for a couple hundred bucks shy of a 1,000 difference.

Yeh, you cant compare cushions without pictures. They differ so broadly. You might be able to find something similar on
James Allen to compare with because they have pictures.

What is mtg? I assume you mean engagement ring but I've never seen that abv before. You might try looking at
www.diamondsbylauren.com because he does sell some Daussi rings. Edit - do a search on Daussi.

www.idjewelryonline.com also sells some Daussi settings if you are trying to check on the cost of the setting.
Edit - look under halo settings and you'll find some.

I think MTG must mean Mounting?

I found that it was very hard for brick & mortar stores to compare to online prices. You have to make sure you're comparing apples to apples though. I didn't buy a cushion, so I don't know all the ins and outs of that process, but with round brilliant stones there could be a pretty big difference between one stone and another of equal "Four C's" specifications.

I'd say if it's a "big chain" you're even less likely to get a great deal because there is more overhead, not only rent but marketing, paying executives, etc. If I was going to go brick and mortar store, I would definitely steer clear of big chains.

Also keep in mind that online you don't pay tax.

If you don't buy the diamond from that store though, it may not be great to bring them an online stone and still shoot for in-store service with the mounting (not sure they'd turn you away, but they sure won't be happy about it).

Who graded the diamond? A lab? a in house gemologist? I'd be very careful, not all labs are created equal and claiming to be a GIA grad gemologist is NOT the same thing as having a GIA lab report.

We recommend only purchasing GIA and AGS graded stones. They are the most consistent and reputable labs in the world. You should stay clear of labs like EGL who are notorious for their soft grading. We have seen them be 5 grades or more of a comparable GIA or AGS stone. They may appear to be a bargain, but in actuality you end up paying more for them than an accurately graded stone.

The diamond I am looking at has a Gia report. I apologize for not spelling out "mounting" when I typed "mtg". That's how it was written on paper.

I trust this person because I know them personally. I'm afraid to make such a big purchase online and risk something going wrong with delivery or such. I can understand that it is difficult for a brick and mortar place to compete with online business because of the reasons stated. It makes perfect sense. Now here is another thought. The ring itself is thin! I was told that if I purchase it in white gold that it would be durable and won't take a different shape (oval) like platinum would. Is this true? I read that platinum is durable, greater than white gold.

thanks for all your help. i really appreciate it :)

I'm afraid to name the business because of privacy reasons.
