Garry gets up at 5.30am most days, answers his emails (USA is at work) while putting on his gym clothes and heads off to meet some mates (aussie for male friends) at 6am and go for a 5km (3 mile) run. They then do a few weights, shower and sauna and he heads of for an 8am breakfast / cafe meeting which he has most mornings with various management staff from his 2 jewellery stores (www.preciousmetals.com.au).

He spends most of the day in his open office above the bigger of the 2 shops, being bombarded with questions; like how high should this diamond be set, will Mrs jones like that.....what do you think of this diamond, the dealers wants $xxx etc etc. At the moment they are renovating the shop next door to make room for some expansion and to get some of the upstairs management staff, downstairs where the action is. In between all this he works on various Diamond-Cut related businesses, Ideal-Scope, Sarin, MSU / OctoNus and Pricescope projects. Christian (full time) and Raj work (p/t) in this area too and these 3 boys will remain upstairs after the renovation.

The Canterbury store, est 1976, with some photo shop work on signage etc. The store is on a busy main road and most of the other shop fronts in the small strip are offices. PM is a busy store, with 4 jewellers and 12 sales, gemo'' and admin people. The Brighton store has 2 jewellers and 3 1/2 staff and is an old bank chamber with a 25ft ceiling.

A typical day at work ends around 7PM and a 5 minute commute to a pretty Edwardian home. Most nights Garry and Drena (Adrianna) eat out (or throw some fish on the Barbie) and compare days over a couple of glasses of nice wine. The area they live in has become quite cosmopolitan with 50 odd restraunts from which to choose. Many are BYO and so drinking nice wine is cost effective. By 8.00 or 9.00 Drena is asleep on the sofa with a novel in hand (she has a 1 hour 50 mile commute) while Garry begins his ''nerding'' on the lap top.

The lap top goes every where with Garry. It is often refferred to as his girl friend (ie mistress) but those who know Garry say he would never be attracted to anything so flat!

At this time Sergey and Yuri are at work at Moscow State Uni, Europe is online and Leonid will be about to wake up just as Garry is getting drowsy (although Leonid often has a little 3am insomniac attack) they, and others from various organisations involved in cut work, exchange 3 word emails back and forward throughout the Aussie evening. By 11.30pm Garry usually disconnects and reads the Economist for 10 minutes, to unwind, before joining Drena who by about 10pm has moved from sofa to bed.

Friday nights are Japanese dinner nights with a few friends. Sometimes Garry has been known to be a little cheeky after arriving home on Friday evening and posting on RT (or in days of old on DT). They do all enjoy their wine on Friday.

He works every second Saturday in the store. He likes to go for a 70km bike ride early Sunday morning with a mate or 2. Sundays usually are 1/2 cut work and 1/2 sitting in a cafe reading news papers or heaven forbid - shopping

Sounds like a blast.

I think you've got things pretty much in order, as the Germans would say (alles es in ordnung).

I bet it's fun living in Australia.

Leonid, would you get Garry's picture in the ski outfit up here, please? When people read about him they will want to see what he looks like...and they won't find the birthday thread all that easily! Men think we want to look at buildings. Honestly, they have no sense.

Deborah ;-)

Never mind, Leonid. I did it myself ;-).

Heh, Garry, knowing you Aussies I *might* believe all of this true--except for the hard work part!

Thanks guy's

Hest some people think I am very hard working.
Even by USA standards

I think I am lucky to be able to spend most of my waking moments doing things I really like doing and working with many people who I like and admire; both in my own company and associates around the world.

I want to be Garry Holloway.

What strikes me most about the skiing picture, aside from the fact that you are a handsome man, is that bird in your hand. Perhaps it's me - but it's a powerful image of tenderness & heart. And the whole bird in the hand thing.

Yeah, I think way too much.

Nah, that's not your problem. Thinking a lot is OK. The problem is that you are sensitive and reflective (or maybe even artistic). I am simply lustful. The bird holds no meaning for me other than that I would get Garry to wash his hands if I were able to engage him in more meaningful activity ;-).

Garry reminds me of Sean Connery in that bird picture.

What a life Garry...the biggest thing I get out of your story is that you are content. Such a cool thing to be.

I have to tell ya, I really admire you for doing the 3 mile run, and how you keep in touch with your staff with the breakfast meeting.

The last time I ran a mile, I threw up. Then I threw up again after meeting with my staff.

Rich, works better alone...

Gosh, Garry, I thought I was busy! Your weeks make mine sound like a piece of cake! But we are not as content as you sound. I live in a FRANTIC family!

Well PQ I just re read your post - I had dinner tonight with 10 of my staff from the store pictured above - we made budget in October and this was the 'night out'.

If both stores make budget it is a night out for partners too.

Drena and I went - she under protest - i told her we were going somewhere 'different' and to be home early. She heard 'special' but true to form she switched into entertainment mode and was just delightful (inspite of giving me an ear full "stop the car - I will walk home" - on the way to the restraunt.)

I am rambling - but the point is that we all lead hectic lives, but we all have the ability to choose. Most people spend 1-4 hours a night in front of a little screen called a TV. I spend my leisure time doing that in front of this screen. And the difference between work and pleasure is not distinct. I do not rate work as 1 out of 10 and liesure as 9 out of 10.

I read somewhere about balance. Think of a horizontal piece of wire and a bead that slides along it. Hppiness is normally thought to be at the right hand end, and misery at the left hand end. Right?
I try to be happy and be in the middle 5-7. If I am unhappy I try to be 4-5. Lots of people think happy is 10 and unhappy is 0.
But then your bead drops of the wire!!!!
You can always be happier - and no matter how bad things get - there is always someone worse off than you.

So be happy, and do not be too extreme in your moods.
My 5 on the scale might be some peoples 8 or 9. But remeber your defining moments are often the stressful times - like a divorce of death of a child or partner. Then you can go to 2 - but never below 1!

well Garry that's enough!

Just popping in to say "Hello".

It seems you have quite the female fan club Garry! I love the Bird in Hand photo, it is a classic.

I agree w/ Mara, Garry does look like Sean Connery from the angle in the photo

NICE Pic! whoever took it has great photography skills..

Hi, I was just started reading about the people who got that cool Pricescope pin and I read the interesting life of Cut Nut. I have to say for the most part people here are sure up and about which is great. Then I always always find Richard Sherwood's commentary quite comical and amusing. I have to say that I just cracked up when I read this from him, "I have to tell ya, I really admire you for doing the 3 mile run, and how you keep in touch with your staff with the breakfast meeting. The last time I ran a mile, I threw up. Then I threw up again after meeting with my staff. Rich, works better alone..."

As for the bird in the hand picture, I must ask...how did you get the bird to stand so peacefully on your hand? Were you holding out diamonds as a lure?
love.gif
Anyway thanks for the gym reminder. I can get into a rut when I stop working out because I'm too lazy to walk to the gym, but then once I get started then it becomes much more of a habit. Hey if you can do the 3 mile run at 5:30 a.m. then I could at least try for six at a normal time of when I wake up which wavers from 9-10 a.m. Thanks for sharing your happiness with life Cut Nut. I think if people were content more like you and learned how to relax and laugh once in awhile then life would be much more enjoyable. Thanks for sharing your awesome story.

P.S. What ski lodge was that pic taken from? Absolutely beautiful! I have to add that to places that I must travel to during my lifetime.

I can not remeber the lodge name - someone will though I am sure?

Yes Rich is a wonderful human bean - amazing - all the more so because he has serious illness in his family, but he always goes out of his way to be nice to everyone. And his wit is legendary.

We think Utah might be the place to ski next year - or Lake Louise? Any ski bucks or bunnies with an opinion?

Hey Cut Nut,
Try these places by looking at the following two links. Hope you enjoy. I could say the Midwest region right now or upstate Wisconsin will prove to be slushy so it is not really recommended if you want natural snow and not man made. It's warming up right now in the fifties.
Enjoy the websites!

HI:

Since Lake Louise is my neck of the woods--I live in Calgary AB--I can vouch for our Rockies and its excellent skiing, impossibly beautiful vistas and first class wining and dining. Whistler is great too--we have many friends with properties there--but of course I am partial to my backdoor playground.....
I would be happy to let you know about places to stay, etc.....

cheers

Hi Garry,

We've skiied Lake Louise, Banff, and Sunshine -- all great places, accessible from banff, which is a fun town. However, IMO, nothing can match the Utah snow. It is super light and dry, with multiple resorts to choose from. The snow is better and the prices are better on the Alta/Snowbird etc side. But, Park City is a fun spot and the snow is still great on that side -- just more $$. Both are within an hour of the Salt Lake City airport, which makes everthing super easy.

Another great, but harder to get to place, is Mammoth Lakes, in CA. it's in the eastern Sierras, adjacent to yosemite. The town is at 8000 feet, the peak at 11k so the snow is typically great, and the town is fun. They have 27 high speed lifts, so it's a big place with something for everyone. This year they opened on Oct 21 with a 4 foot powder base. (Three weeks early from their man-made snow planned opening.) It's looking like a great winter in the Western US if this continues
emsmiled.gif
. Weekdays are best as it's the LA ski spot on weekends and holidays, but it still manages a crowd really well. Sometimes I'm looking for a lift line, just to get a rest.
