Garry gets up at 5.30am most days, answers his emails (USA is at work) while putting on his gym clothes and heads off to meet some mates (aussie for male friends) at 6am and go for a 5km (3 mile) run. They then do a few weights, shower and sauna and he heads of for an 8am breakfast / cafe meeting which he has most mornings with various management staff from his 2 jewellery stores (www.preciousmetals.com.au).
He spends most of the day in his open office above the bigger of the 2 shops, being bombarded with questions; like how high should this diamond be set, will Mrs jones like that.....what do you think of this diamond, the dealers wants $xxx etc etc. At the moment they are renovating the shop next door to make room for some expansion and to get some of the upstairs management staff, downstairs where the action is. In between all this he works on various Diamond-Cut related businesses, Ideal-Scope, Sarin, MSU / OctoNus and Pricescope projects. Christian (full time) and Raj work (p/t) in this area too and these 3 boys will remain upstairs after the renovation.
The Canterbury store, est 1976, with some photo shop work on signage etc. The store is on a busy main road and most of the other shop fronts in the small strip are offices. PM is a busy store, with 4 jewellers and 12 sales, gemo'' and admin people. The Brighton store has 2 jewellers and 3 1/2 staff and is an old bank chamber with a 25ft ceiling.
A typical day at work ends around 7PM and a 5 minute commute to a pretty Edwardian home. Most nights Garry and Drena (Adrianna) eat out (or throw some fish on the Barbie) and compare days over a couple of glasses of nice wine. The area they live in has become quite cosmopolitan with 50 odd restraunts from which to choose. Many are BYO and so drinking nice wine is cost effective. By 8.00 or 9.00 Drena is asleep on the sofa with a novel in hand (she has a 1 hour 50 mile commute) while Garry begins his ''nerding'' on the lap top.
The lap top goes every where with Garry. It is often refferred to as his girl friend (ie mistress) but those who know Garry say he would never be attracted to anything so flat!
At this time Sergey and Yuri are at work at Moscow State Uni, Europe is online and Leonid will be about to wake up just as Garry is getting drowsy (although Leonid often has a little 3am insomniac attack) they, and others from various organisations involved in cut work, exchange 3 word emails back and forward throughout the Aussie evening. By 11.30pm Garry usually disconnects and reads the Economist for 10 minutes, to unwind, before joining Drena who by about 10pm has moved from sofa to bed.
Friday nights are Japanese dinner nights with a few friends. Sometimes Garry has been known to be a little cheeky after arriving home on Friday evening and posting on RT (or in days of old on DT). They do all enjoy their wine on Friday.
He works every second Saturday in the store. He likes to go for a 70km bike ride early Sunday morning with a mate or 2. Sundays usually are 1/2 cut work and 1/2 sitting in a cafe reading news papers or heaven forbid - shopping
