I have said it before, but Pricescope and its members are a blessing!

Do you guys think I will be able to get a 1ct round-cut diamond for 3000 or less? It will be going into a platinum ring with .5ct of channel mount diamonds. I really want to get her a full carat, but obviously I can''t sacrifice too much quality in the process.

Thanks!

It is possible but it really depends on how much your willing to sacrifice in terms of cut, clarity and colour and who it is certified by.

also would depend on what shape you are after as well

Sure you can - but one or more of the categories of cut, color, clarity will suffer badly!

Can you? Yes. Would I? No.

I would not want to sacrifice the cut quality to have a bigger, icky, foggy white, black speckled diamond. I want a diamond that has mad crazy sparkle and fire.

Well I'm not sure that it would be quite that bad, but this is what I would do:

1. raise your price to around $3300 with ps discount and get this beauty: http://www.whiteflash.com/round_ideal_cut/Round-Ideal-Cut-cut-diamond-684410.htm

2. lower your carat size a tad bit and check this one out: http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1111639.asp?b=16&a=12&c=77&cid=131

3. Contact Mark at ERD and tell him your budget and see if he could find you a J, eye clean SI2 which may be in your price range. A J SI2 would really give you some bang for buck. I'm the proud owner of a I SI2 and it was a great value.

.90 is close to a carat and you probably would not notice the size difference.

Yup, what she said. Sound advice

I would say go with one of the great options hera picked for you, or, make that setting White Gold, and use the extra money for something bigger.

Love that 0.92 that hera posted for you from WF - its a great value for the money, and the 0.08 ct difference in size will be so miniscule that I can''t imagine you''ll even be able to tell. Especially since your ideally cut 0.92 will have better spread (i.e. will look bigger) and because of the ideal cut will be sparklier and more firey than 99% of the 1 carat diamonds out there.

I''ve had my eye on that .92 J/VS1 from WF and even have an email into Lesley about it. The spread is terrific and it will be larger than most mall stores 1 carats for sure. It is the next best buy in the .8-.9ish arena next to dreamer''s (that just sold) at WF right now.

Be sure to tell WF you want the PS and wire discounts. It will make it even more affordable than the listed price.

This one is lovely as well:
http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-609781.htm# .78 I/VS2 Measurements: 5.95-5.96X3.65 $2949

If I were in your shoes (and I kinda was cuz I had a similar budgt--maybe smaller even) I would start with selecting ideal cuts and then work within those parameters to get the biggest stone, probably in the I/J VS2/SI1 range. These stones can be hard to find, as cinammon pointed out, WF doesn''t have many in this range right now, so that could mean waiting or stretching the budget a little. Your best buys would be in the .80 - .90 range, but these may not even be visually discriminable from 1cts anyways!

Sorry small thread-jack: how much is the PS discount at WF? I was told that I would get 3% discount if I wired the money and that this was the PS discount... did I miss out on something else?

It may vary depending on what you are buying. I thought you go 3% if it was a setting, and 5% on the stone amount - all of this by wiring the money. But I could just be forgetful. I''d just verify again with your WF rep. They are honest!

I think what you''re after is possible. A very well cut J/SI stone could fit the bill.

Don''t forget to check out PS vendors "virtual" inventory. WF has pulled in and reviewed these for me and I''ve found 2 winners this way!

For example, I found this doing a quick search, scores 1.3 on the HCA.

It takes some time to dig and poke around at the inventory, but there are some winners in there, I have one on my finger now and the old one is now a WF ES stone for sale.

If you are going to set the diamond in a platinum setting I wouldn''t go less than ''H" in color. Perhaps going for a white gold setting will give you more bang for your buck.

There are quite a few J stone owners who chose platinum and the combo has become very popular as a result of how bright well-cut J stones look even when set in platinum. There''s a huge thread where J stones are shown. . .

Dreamer, no, you didn''t miss out. :-)

Discounted pricing is only applicable on bankwire transactions. Standard bankwire transactions with no PS affiliation are discounted at 2%. PS discounts, which are also bankwire transactions, are slightly steeper than the standard bankwire discount with no PS affiliation. The amount of additional discount varies depending on whether the stone is Expert Selection or ACA.

Yep. BIG difference between extremely well cut J''s vs. "maul" J''s.

better safe than sorry.
