Hi,

Does someone out there know the difference between the 6-prong solitaire platinum bands shown on such sites as Blue Nile ($350) or Mondera ($300)?

If not, and I wanted to follow up with the companies directly, what would be the 'right' questions for me to ask?

Or are the differences negligible, and I shouldn't worry about it?

Thanks,

Matt

We've seen platinum six prong solitaires sell for less than fifty bucks! Of course, the prongs bend when you breath on them and the platinum content is abismal, but it's "platinum"... So the questions to ask are:

Platinum content.

Weight of the piece.

Hi Matt,

To add to NiceIce's post, along with platinum content, you want to check and see the alloy that is used in each company's platinum setting. This link here from The Art of Platinum gives a great rundown of the pros and cons of the different alloys used in platinum settings. You and/or your girlfriend may also want to look into this further to make sure that she is not allergic to the alloy used, which can be an issue sometimes as well.

Hope this helps and please keep us posted.

Hi there- which alloys cause allergic reactions? I am SO allergic to nickel- it's not funny. I cant wear my class ring from college for more than an evening because my finger breaks out into a itchy red rash.

I have a platinum wedding band that is just marked PLAT KMP- never had a problem though.

Hi PinkFlamingo,

Thanks for your post. As you know, nickel commonly does tend to cause an allergic reaction, but it depends on the person, really. Platinum alloys are less of an issue (again depending on the individual). Please understand that I meant it as a suggestion for him and his girlfriend to consider, in case she should happen to have any allergies. The real issue with platinum alloys (as described in the link I provided) is the durability and wear of the setting (e.g. issues such as metal brittleness, porosity, etc.).

Thanks again for your post.

Some people are allergic to Platinum / Cobalt where nobody seems to be allergic to Platinum / Iridium. The Cobalt mixture is also magnetic, something we mention just because somebody asked us about that last week

We do cover the various platinum mixtures available at the bottom of the page we reference by the way, it's pretty thorough.
