Hello Everyone! :)

My first post here, having been a serial lurker for ages... but I have to tell you/ask about a diamond I came across yesterday.

Met a lovely lady on the train - she admired my e-ring (1ct AGS0, F, VS2.. different post for future).. but I had already clocked her massive stone and was planning to ask about it at a suitable point in the conversation.

It turns out she was the proud owner of a c. 5ct *original* Asscher cut dimond, which had actually been cut from the Cullinan rough buy Asscher himself!

She''d bought the stone set in an Indian ring (owned by a Sultan or some such person), along with a number of other diamonds. She had kept the centre stone, and sent the rest for auction, and had hers re-set.

I have absolutely no doubt of the lady''s honesty with her story as she was extremely well to-do, with a daughter who is a high-class jewellery designer in London.

Her ring was in dire need of a clean (dirt on diamonds: ack!)... but there was no doubt that the stone was absolutely spectacular.

She didn''t know the stats of the stone.. but there was one eye-visible inclusion tucked away in one corner (although not immediately obvious).

The lady actually handed her ring to me to see - and (I had to ask as I was holding it!) let me try it on. :D

I felt really honoured to have seen & tried on this amazing gem... but being the diamond nut I am.. I have just been fascinated to know what such a stone might be worth.

Any ideas?

Idea:

If the Diamond come with proof of provenance (Cullinan)..., price will be attached to Historic value...
Especially if the Diamond was cut by Asscher''s factory itself... into an original Asscher Cut..

Exactly :)

I realised that the value of the gem would be far beyond that of an ''Asscher-style'' cut 5ct stone - because of the history and rarity. Just made me rather excited about what someone would have to pay to get something so unique and amazing!

Would have to pay what one wants to pay and meet what one wants to sell..., could have nothing to do with the market prices...

Well lucky you! How nice of her to hand it over for inspection, not sure I would have been quite that obliging though.

So tell me, what size finger was it and how much coverage was there (on you) ??

Enquiring minds want to know.

I know! I can''t believe the lady actually took it off and handed it to me!!! (I would never have asked her to... if it was mine I think I''d have it welded onto my finger!).

Her ring size was probably about a K at a guess, as it was a little loose on my size I finger (English sizes from me, I''m afraid). I think size I is somewhere around a USA size 4... so you can imagine a 5ct stone looked pretty incredible on my hand!

There were a couple of trapezoid stones each side - so my finger was well covered by the ring in both directions.

I could reaaaaally get used to seeing that beauty on my hand, believe me!

Funny, my sister-in-law has an antique, 2ct Old Mine Cut diamond, that she paid £15,000 for in its vintage setting (and has since had re-set).. and it does absolutely nothing for me. (Quite a tinted stone to my eyes and not much sparkle). Would rather have my 1ct baby any day...

It wasn''t so much the size of the stone (although it was awesome) that excited me as much as the incredible story behind it. It was like meeting a very famous person that you really admire! LOL!

Oh my, I bet it did cover your enviously small finger!

I love the story AND the stone. That''s my true dream stone, size and all. *sigh*

wowsers
mot everyday that someone lets you try a million dollars plus on your finger.
And I expect that would be on the low side with a factory letter stating what it was at auction.
Wouldnt shock me if if it went for double that.

Iv had the pleasure of holding 2 original Asscher asschers but nothing like that.
WOW

If I were lucky enough to have a pink asscher ring with a provenance like that, I''m sure I would not wear it out of the house!!

You must have been beyond thrilled that she generously let you try it on.

Omigawd - what a serendipitous encounter, eh? I would have keeled over from the excitement of being able to see it up close and try it on
