Forgive me in advance, I've tried to read as much as time allows on the forums over the past month or so prior to searching but I'm not in the same stratosphere of knowledge as you folks, which is why I come asking for help.

Looking for a loose diamond, ideally online to avoid steep CA sales tax, at a price of <$7,000 (2 months salary as a surgical resident). My GF is concerned primarily with size, size, size, so I'm looking to sacrifice certainly on color, and personally would like something eye clean if possible. Cut is so heavily stressed here, and although these are mostly VG, the depth, table crown & pavilion are within parameters I've seen discussed as favorable. Without further delay:

Appreciate your insight,

In regard to the Whiteflash links in your first post, those are just virtual listings. WF is known for the outstanding diamonds they carry in-house. When you search on their site, click the box that says "in-house". In-house diamonds will have yellow stars following the stone listings. Five stars are for their very top of the line stones (A Cut Above) and four to 4.5 are for other excellent/ideal cut stones. I highly recommend looking at diamonds that have magnified photos and light return images.

Just another thought, since she is very interested in size and you have the potential to buy a much more expensive diamonds in the near future, I would absolutely recommend vendors such as WF for the purchase because they allow 100% of what you pay for the diamond to go towards an upgrade later.

Thanks all for the insight! I'm strongly considering the first diamond you linked, that looks to be exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks for the WF information as well. Unfortunately at present there doesn't appear to be anything between .9 & 1.7 (http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3307395.htm which looks outstanding, but out of my range). If something pops up in between, I'd certainly favor WF to be able to upgrade... Does anyone else offer this service, possibly offering a diamond in my range?

What do you all think of these 2 options from my jeweler, in my range... Would you ever buy off a certificate?

Thanks!

I would contact Luann at Id Jewelry and let her do the looking for you. I was looking for a diamond around 1.5ct and I had a very strict budget, she found me something immediately and I could not be more happy.
