I just purchased a 2.4 round brilliant G VS2 ACA from Whiteflash.
Now I'm searching for a 3-stone setting and would really appreciate your feedback on the following:
- Sidestones: Which one - pears or baguettes? Why? Pictures please. Especially side profile pictures.
- Victor Canera or Leon Mege: Who would you go with? Why? I read that their 3-stone settings are different, VC's being more art deco. Can someone tell me exactly how they are different? Pictures? Comparison images?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm not recommending this vendor, per se, but is this the design/type you're interested in?

Victor Canera would be my first choice, as he is a a great person as well as making beautiful quality jewelry. Steven Kirsch would be my second choice of the three popular handforged ringmakers. I would not use the other one because there have been some pretty serious problems.

Is this ring for yourself or someone else? If it is not for you, I recommend finding out if the recipient prefers one style or the other better.

Here are picturs of the settings I'm conidering. From the top down image, the settings from VC and LM are very similar. I wish I had a side view picture comparing the 4 rings.

I would definitely use Victor of those two choices, but Steven Kirsch also makes those style rings and is in NYC.

If I were making the side baguette ring, I would just ask Victor to please angle the sides down just a little more.

I prefer pears as sidestones for larger diamonds, baguettes for smaller diamonds.

I would personally use Steven Kirsch.

The pear sides are beautiful! Although both styles are elegant I like the transition and visual "sparkle-weight" from round-to-pear best

Re: 3-Stone Setting with Pears - Single or Double Claws?

Thank you all for your invaluable responses, suggestions and photos. I really appreciate it. :appl: :appl: :appl:

Per your suggestion, I looked into Steven Kirsch's work and found it beautiful. I will be considering him along with VC and LM. Over this weekend, my husband and I looked at and compared two 3-stone settings: one with pears and one with baguettes. As you all suggested, pears have more brilliance and fire. Hence, I will be moving forward with pear sidestones.

Now the next question is - single claw or double claws?

Deciding on a setting can be so stressful, so I am glad you found what you want! Personally, I would do double claw prongs. It is one of my favorite elements of my SK ring. He does such a nice job that they are discreet and don't overwhelm the stone.

double claw - always!

Re: 3-Stone Setting: Victor Canera or Leon Mege/Pear vs Bagu

Pears...definitely. They have more beautiful lines and are more interesting to look at. Baguettes IMO are cold, have little sparkle
and just dont really do a whole lot.

tweeter8177: Was there anything else that was important or a factor you considered when you went through the process of custom design ring? Location of pears? Angle of pears? Size of double claw prongs? Anything I should be thinking about? Thanks.

Looking at these blownup pictures, Leon's is much more refined and delicate. Look at the point of the pair and the prongs holding the pear in place.

SK is supposed to be great but he did a 3 stone for me with baguettes and it wasn't nearly as delicate as I had asked for there was a lip on the baguettes I expressly asked to not be there and my comments were ignored. It was a piece I had made for a friend and he wanted to propose so we left it as is, not bad but really it was a struggle getting him to get the right sidestones and make it as delicate and refined as the Leon Mege pieces.

Go see Leon and Steven in person and judge for yourself, yes Leon is more expensive and more of a primadonna and SK used to work for him, but if you want the best those are two things you will just have to accept. He is much more charismatic when you meet him in person. Leon works best when you want exactly the style on his website and you discuss up front the details and you make sure they are listed in the "Rules of Engagement" that you sign before you put down a deposit.

The only thing I picked out was the pears. He provided pictures of the pears with my diamond (unset of course) for me to review the proportions. He has made this ring many times before and he will pick the proportions and the angles according to your stone specifically. The only thing that you might want to discuss is the height of the diamond. He does set them very low, so if you want something different, then you would need to discuss that with him. I believe his claw prongs are kind of a "what you see is what you get". That is just how he makes them. The same would go for Leon or Victor I am sure.

One of my biggest concerns with this setting was the v-tip prongs on the pears and Steven assured me that they wouldn't be pointy (and poke my neighboring finger). When i got the ring, I was quite impressed how seamless the pears flow into the shank of the ring. The v-tips are extremely delicate and well done in my opinion.

Keep us posted on who you decide to go with!

Re: 3-Stone Setting: Victor Canera or Leon Mege/Pear vs Bagu

tweeter8177: I read your posts during your setting selection process and found that you debated over the size of the pears - 1.04 pears vs .85 pears. I believe you went with Steve's recommendation for the.85 pears. How do you feel about that decision now?

Re: 3-Stone Setting: Victor Canera or Leon Mege/Pear vs Bagu

Ahh yes, my selection process was stressful! I am glad I didn't go bigger, but it depends on the look you want. Your stone size is plenty big and you don't want the side stones to swallow your beautiful ACA! Also...make sure you specify that you want minimal bow tie on the pears!!!
