I'm sure I'd love the stone if I saw it.

In terms of the appraisal, it really depends on the purpose.
If you want to make sure the stone matches the GIA report, definitely do it first.
If you are confident in the seller, and they provide the proper paperwork to satisfy your insurance company,( if you want insurance) a third party appraisal may not be necessary.
If you do decide to have a third party look at the diamond, it's very important you pick a qualified person.

There's a guy named David Wolfe( I believe) around here who's been recommended by others.

Thanks Rock of Love! My friend is a jewelry designer and is setting it for me - don''t have the drawings yet - but it will be loosely based on Cellini''s halo micro pave band, which is VERY delicate. The diamond seems to float (I call it the UFO setting!) beneath the halo and right above the skin of your hand
