2ct J colour + Very strong fluorescence in halo?

To be honest, yes, it’s mainly me focusing on size. Finding a couple 2ct diamonds within budget, then learning that just GIA XXX isn’t everything made me reconsider.

I’m in contact with HPdiamonds/wink which is truly service minded and fast! So it might go in a 1.5-2ct infinity depending on where the price points gets!

Very smart move :mrgreen2::appl:

This has been a fantastic thread to keep up with. The advice being given is fantastic. To the OP: Just be sure you are keeping your intended's preferences or 'desires' in mind even among the advice being offered here - while you can sit and explain to her all you have learned on PS, if she has an initial disappointment (not likely given the advice you are getting).. but if she does, it will be hard to 'educate it away'... :wink2:

I'm still struggling with that 2.21ct stone :)

My options will probably be,

1. 2.21ct stone GIA XXX
2. 1.8ct HDP Diamond from EU(will get price in a couple of days)
3. 1.8ct ACA/HDP Imported from US

So basically it's size vs cut. Have been trying to see differences in youtube videos between super ideal vs GIA XXX. Asked ED about the 2.21ct and seems to have a lot of brilliance but less fire. When looking only at some off the youtube videos I can't really defend the price difference.

What's worrying about the 2.21ct is the HCA score of 3.8 :/

Don't forget that you can 'See the Difference' with CBI diamonds - it is part of their sales approach that you can try the stone out in the comfort of your home, to assess it in all the different lights that it would be in, and if you're not happy, you can return it.

You would need to check the situation regarding insurance when returning a stone - I'm not sure if the vendor (@Wink or whichever EU dealer is supplying it) arranges insurance as part of the returns process.

That said, though, I was dubious of just how good a CBI stone would be when I ordered the one I bought, as I, too, was new to diamonds and was unimpressed with anything I found locally - the moment I opened it up to look at it, any doubts were gone! I wasted many an hour playing with it before I eventually had it set into a ring  lol

If you are importing a stone from the US, you might also want to check out if you will get the sales tax back should you decide to return it.

Regarding the 2.21 being a 3.8 on the HCA, honestly I think the best way is to do a side by side comparison between the 2.21 and a super ideal, in person.

Videos and photos are monoscopic (i.e. as if we are looking at something with one eye) whereas in real life, our vision is stereoscopic (i.e. we use both eyes) so how it performs in real life could be different. The other thing is, given the price / size difference between the two, only you can decide if it is worth the trade off. A super ideal usually costs about 20% to 30% more than a well cut, but not super ideal stone. Whether or not the performance of the super ideal is worth the premium, or worth going down substantially in carat/color for vs a larger stone, is a matter of personal preference.

The HCA is a nice weeding out tool, but it's not absolute that a stone with a HCA<2 equals fantastic stone. For example, there have been posters who had diamonds with AGS (a grading lab) with a cut grade of 0 (i.e. close to super ideal), but the HCA is bigger than 2, so the HCA is not absolute. If you are buying blind (i.e. never seeing the stone) then HCA is a safe bet, but since you have the option of seeing the stones IRL that's probably a better option.

Problem is that if I'm importing a stone and then return it I will have to pay Swedish VAT of 25% which I won't get back. This means that I will never have the option to see the stone before it's set/purchased. I will survive it either way. As long as the stone is far better then my GF imagines I'm good to go and the only thing she has seen is 0.25-0.5ct GIA very good -> xxx(in best case, not even sure).

Are you sure you won't get the tax back?

You should ring the Tax office and ask the question.

Hmm I suspect you’re going to enjoy knowing that your fiancée’s diamond is over 2 carat enough to make it a priority number 1-2. Did you notice that @OoohShiny gave a couple of large stone options from JA that were better on the HCA result?
