Hi
I have an over 2 carat diamond left from my grandmother. It''s from 80ies, Russian cut. It''s been hiding in my closet for few years now and I think it''s time to get it out and make a nice ring out of it. My problem is that the rock does not have have any certification. I want to insure it too.
The insurance agent told me to have it appraised. The appraiser can tel me the cut, the size and maybe clarity, right?
If I want to get a map of all inclusions if any, what do I do?
When I bring it to the jeweler how can I be sure it won''t be replaced with a glass? Find a reputable jeweler? I only have few hundred dollars as a budget for setting it in.
Please advise the course of action in my case.

As long as you go to a reputable independent appraiser, ie. one who does not sell diamonds, you should be fine.

Hi gorgorita

An independant appraiser would be the best person to help you for sure, an appraiser can tell you a tremendous amount about your stone to include the cut, weight, clarity, colour and more. The appraiser will also be able to help you identify your stone, also for extra peace of mind ( although swapping out stones and especially distinctive cuts is extremely rare) your appraiser can either verify the stone is the same once set or show you any identifying inclusions so you can do so yourself. You could also if desired, get the diamond graded by GIA, a reputable appraiser would be able to tell you how to proceed with this.

Here is the appraiser tool.

With a stone of this importance, my advice would be to send it to GIA for a report.
An appraisal is a good thing to have but it''s different in many important ways for a GIA report.
It sounds like a beautiful stone.
The Russian cuts of the ''80''s are AMAZING!!
