hello,

i recently purchased a 2.01 carat round diamond to be set in a solitare setting. After lots of back and forth, i've narrowed it down to two settings. both in rose gold.

1) http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/14k-white-gold-six-prong-knife-edged-solitaire-engagement-ring-handmade-item-41245

or

2) http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/james-allen-exclusive-engagement-ring-item-49378

i'm really going for the thin band look to show off the diamond. my S/O prefers simple, and i think both of these accomplish that.

my concerns are:
1) i feel like the 2.8mm knife edge band may to too thick for the look i'm going for. does anyone have experience with that size band with a 2.0 carat diamond?
2) the knife edge may be harder to match a diamond wedding band to; which is also the look i'm going for.
2) will 2.2mm tapered to 1.8mm be too flimsy for a large stone such as 2.0 carat? this should match a diamond wedding band fairly easily?

any and all opinions are greatly appreciated. looking to make the decision within the next few hours!!!1

Welcome! For future reference, questions about diamonds and settings go in the Rocky Talky part of the forum. This one is for showing pictures of the finished ring or pieces of jewelry.

I vastly prefer the first setting. It is not and issue to have a diamond wedding band go with a knife edge ring. Many of us have had them. Be sure you tell them that the prongs need to be platinum (preferably) or white gold. I think the shank tapers so it is probably only 2.8mm right next to the diamond. A lot of people have bought that same setting in all platinum, and I have never noticed it being too wide. The pictures of it on the hand do not look too wide, either (looking at platinum). I just think the other one is not attractive at all.

thanks for the comment. is there a way to move this thread?

that way maybe it will get more opinions as well!

Not a fan of the knife edged setting - to my eye it's too chunky. LOVE the other setting. So you can see - given my comments and Diamondseeker's comments (and I consider both of us to have pretty good taste when it comes to jewelry!) - it's all about personal taste! Which is also why nobody's taste matters, really, except your fiancee's.

FWIW - I had a 2.15ct solitaire set in the Brian Gavin Diamonds tapered Tiffany band, and it was gorgeous. Here's a link to a diamond band I bought with lots of photos of it next to my solitaire. The photos of the band plus the solitaire start about half way down the page. They're in yellow gold, but it's not a huge mental stretch to imagine it in rose gold.

JA will send a stone elsewhere to be set, so if the tapered Tiffany solitaire really floats your boat, you can always send your stone to BGD to have it put in this setting. The BGD tapered Tiffany is also a 6 prong head and, like the knife edged solitaire, it's $850. One bonus, though - the BGD tapered Tiffany is in 18kt, not 14kt.

And here's a link to the BGD page for the ring in rose gold.

Good luck!

ETA The BGD shank is integrated better into the head of the ring than the JA ring is. If you look at the JA ring, you'll notice an air gap between the band and where it joins the head. The BGD ring, however, has no gap. The head doesn't look like it's just been shoved in there. It joins the band and the whole ring is better integrated and has better flow. Hope this helps!

I vote neither. That BGD setting blows both JA settings out of the water.

BGD is my favorite as well.

Also like the BGD setting the most.

You can find wedding bands to match the knife edge so that shouldn't be a big deal. 2ct stone should be fine with 2.8mm shank. Rose gold also helps blend into skin tones so it can look smaller and less distracting.
