our circumstances have changed and it looks like we might not make it to the US to build my dream ring in person. so i will start the search for my dream OEC stone online now and likely put it in a temporary setting until we have time to do a permanent setting later on.

so i have $25,000 for a stone. must be OEC and must face up white (im thinking I/J would be fine) must have outstanding optics and symmetry. should be eyeclean, have a medium culet and would love blue flouresence as long as it doesnt negatively affect the stone. I'm assuming this will get me a 2.5 carat stone. leaning towards transitional stone faceting preferred although modern brilliants need not apply! :P

I shot off an email to Jonathan from GOG yesterday specifying this and asking him to have a look for me. i would be thrilled to own one of the rare genuine OEC's that occasionally makes an appearance on his youtube videos and he raves about for being one in a million. i want that one in a million stone!

so any suggestions welcomed otherwise i will post when i get some suggestions from jonathan :) thanks guys

I would contact Jewels by Erica Grace and also Adam at Old World DIamonds with your info. On average I think they are less expensive then GOG so you get more bang for your buck.

Jonathan has access to Old World Diamonds and other antique stone dealers in NYC. I'd use him to source the stone because he can help ensure that you get one without a lot of leakage, etc. They are closed today, and their area is expecting a hurricane to arrive tonight and on into tomorrow. So please understand that there may be a delay in their reply to you as widespread power outages are expected.

Just wanted to add that GOG's prices will be competitive based on my last diamond purchase from Jonathan. It was a virtual stone and I didn't want to buy it blind without checking light performance, etc. Yes, I may have paid a little more, but I got a lot more in terms of service that was necessary for me to know if the stone was a good one. And that would be even more essential for me in choosing an OEC since many are not well cut.

But again, GOG may or may not have power this week, so be patient with them!

I would second the recommendation for Adam at OWD. They have access to a ton of stones, and not all of them are on their website. Adam found me something that I never would have expected I could get with my budget, and was a total dream to work with, so I completely recommend contacting them for an OEC. JBEG also has a ton of great old stones, and they are all listed on their site. Good luck!

Ditto. In my experience, GOG was NOT charging significantly more than OWD for the same exact stones. It was like a difference of $40, which I'd be more than willing to pay to get that light performance check, plus video with the stone in 4 different light settings.

Just curious, if I may. The OEC from GOG is getting good reviews from you guys. Yet looking at the info, GIA rates it as a "poor" cut??

Do things work differently for OECs?

Cut grade's %'s of angles are for MRB's. They're comparing it to that of a MRB. Ignore it :naughty:
Think of the OEC as a 'fancy cut'.

Just wanted to point out that is GIA Facetware, but it is EGL graded.

1. I believe that OWD might negotiate on pricing. I'm not sure if that's what people mean when they say the prices are lower. At OWD the price listed isn't strictly firm.
2. GIA "fair" is only for MRB, not for old cuts. Ignore.
3. EGL is industry standard for old cuts. Ask GOG to tell you what the "true" color grade is based on GIA scale. They have both the technology and the expertise to do this.

I REALLY adore that GOG stone. REALLY REALLY REALLY. That would be my frontrunner, if it were me looking for a stone.

Yep, if that GOG stone wasn't over my size limit, it might be on it's way to visit me! Very nice stone and look at the spread...8.5mm!

Ummm, yeah....that stone is TDF!!!!!!!!

You could check out some of these on this thread. I Think they were over her budget. There is a GIA J SI1 that is really nice on ebay, which is certed as a RB but it is not...it is an OEC (posted by Ruby). And a large transitional that I posted. But the large 2.77 GIA J SI1 was my fav.and it has med. blue Fl. and 8.9mm. Note the old "buy it now" price was $21,500. The antique setting is really nice too.

I've heard that GOG can be more expensive but either way i would still buy from them. being in australia i cant afford to buy stone and have them posted over, pay 10% tax to get them in the country to find out with my own unexperienced eyes if they have good light performance and fantastic sparkle! i would gladly pay someone experienced who really analyzes light performance to do that for me. and besides i feel indebted to jonathan for all that i've learnt from his website and youtube videos.

i can't see the GOG stone :( i guess the hurricane hasn't done much good for their servers? i feel like a dufus for emailing him my request just before the hurricane. hope everyone in the north east US is doing alright.

I have been following KimN's thread with interest actually. i do like the 2.77ct J si1 on ebay and how convenient for it be in such a lovely setting! how could you be sure about the light performance though? i could ask them for a video but even then i dont know how confident i would be. also they dont do returns only exchanges...

hippi - have you seen any large old cuts in person? I had a difficult time locating any in Perth when I did my research window shopping. It's a good idea to see them though, to make sure that what you love on a computer screen, you actually love IRL, ya know?

I can understand wanting to ensure performance is excellent before having to deal with forking over a truckload in GST, but that should not rule out vendors other than GOG. I bought my largeish antique cushion from Adam at OWD (who was much more competitive with pricing than GOG, for me) and had it sent directly to Neil Beaty for assessment (bonus that John Pollard was in the store that day and had a look as well). He was the one who OBJECTIVELY appraised the stone for accurate retail value, provided ASET images, ran a Sarin, and in general told me exactly how its performance compared to the gamut of stones he has seen over the years. The information that GOG provides for their stones is also available from a number of third party valuers who have 'no dog in the race,' so to speak.

With quite a few East Coast servers down, probably for the better part of a week, I'm guessing it might be a while before you hear back from the NYC vendors. :(sad

Good luck if you decide to contact JBEG (Jewels by Erica Grace). I can't get them to return a single phone call. I gave up on them. Too bad, because I was ready to spend some money! Their loss... :snore:

Hi Singer, I'm so sorry to read that you were unable to reach us. I confess that we do about 90% of our business via email, and aren't always immediately available by phone, but we try to be very diligent about returning every voicemail and strive to return calls within 24 hours. It sounds as though you left one or more messages that weren't returned and for that I'm truly sorry. Please accept our sincere apologies for this, and hopefully you've found the piece of your dreams!

just ginger yes i have seen old cuts in person and definately love them in person. I've flown to melbourne and sydney to check out everything i could find. i took photos to post on here but i lost everything when i moved into my new iphone 5 (i was furious).

trying on old cut rings makes my heart go a million miles whereas as modern cuts even trying on rings in tiffanys... i can see they sparkle a lot but theres no personality in the stone so my heart is unaffected! my mums ering is an inherited 1 carat old mine cut in what looks like the original platinum setting and she has a matching 3 stone ring which i have grown up admiring both.

i think i would be more comfortable making a purchase elsewhere if i had it sent straight away to be checked out. how did you organise that process? if Neil Beatty hadn't like the stone would it have gone straight back to OWD? and could you do this with several stones?

yea after seeing some of the pictures of the damage in NY i won't be expecting much at all. even when they get up and running im sure there will be more urgent things to address. although i'm always surprised in Aus how quickly things get up and running again after a disaster

i can see the GOG stone now and although the facet patterning is great it doesn't seem to perform well in the aset and diamxray images. i assume thats why it only has a limited guarantee. The seller of the ebay 2.77 j si1 is going to send me a video of the stone once new york gets back to normal

The ASET of that GOG stone is nice. Lots of red, even blue contrast, the green you expect from horizontal light sources in an OEC. If you're keen to get a "perfect" (though that's subjective, of course) ASET, you will perhaps require a newly cut stone instead. One of GOG, VC, or ERD's products. Don't forget that the personality of old cuts, the bit you really love, is often a direct result of cutting "imperfections." :))

PS - I felt the same way when I was searching for my new ring. 3 carat MRB in Tiffany's did nothing for me. The sales lady kept looking at me like I should be squealing with delight, but I was underwhelmed.

Ask Jon about the guarantee. I think it will always show 'limited guarantee' if it's not in house, or if it's not already purchased for the store?? Not sure, but mine said limited guarantee, too, until I asked him about it. This was also the case for LJL's stone.

I was just looking around and saw the same GIA report above on ID Jewelry and Solomon Brothers as with the supposed 2.77 OEC Diamond on ebay that I posted when another poster was looking for a large OEC diamond. I know several people were admiring it, so I wanted to point this out.

Maybe I am missing something but I do not think that GIA report goes with the OEC diamond listed on ebay.
