2 solid 14k gold chains w/ a different colors

Can someone explain to me why these chains have a different color. The thicker one was recently verified by a jeweler as 14k but we both noted that it looked a bit darker than most of the 14k gold items I had. The jeweler I purchased the thicker one from noted that the chain was recently dipped in 14k gold to put an extra coat to give it a polished/new look, and that is why it is darker then explained that it would eventually turn pale like the other items once it gets some wear to it. Should I believe that?

May have 18k gold plating even, have read they do this in Italy sometimes to give a richer look.
