I have been working with Jonathan at August Vintage Inc. to replace my lost engagement ring (thank god for insurance!). I had originally contacted him because I wanted to look at his Opulence Ovals, but I was also curious about his vintage cuts. Back before my husband and I got engaged (10 years ago!) I had fallen in love with an antique ring and always had those at the back of my mind.
I told him that I was looking for a diamond in the 2ct range, around I color, and he happened to have an AVC, an Opulence Oval, and an AVR in stock around that size and I arranged to see them in person. The Oval was an F color and out of my price range, but there is an I color coming soon with similar dimensions.
When I saw them in person, I instantly narrowed it down to the cushion and the oval. I discarded the AVR quickly because in order to find one in my price range, I would need to go down significantly in color. BUT, it was gorgeous too!!! I have the cushion on hold for a very short period of time (the actual oval I would purchase is not here yet). I would love your opinion on these stones! Here are the specs:
Cushion
2.3 J/VS2
7.60 - 8.01 x 5.15mm
Oval
2.04 F/SI1 (My oval would be 2.01 I/SI1--similar l/w ratio and dimensions)
6.52 - 9.25 x 5.12
The Oval was just stunning- I have been looking at ovals for a while now and these are really in a league of their own. the the way that it reflects light is even throughout and there are no dead areas. It reminds me of a round brilliant and there is really no compromise here in therms of cut. The fact that this was an F color helped as well, and it was just SO SHINY! The is NO BOW TIE whatsoever, and I also noticed that the color doesn't pool around the top and bottom edges like in most other ovals. The only caveat I would give for these ovals is that in order to give maximum light return their are cut deeper than most other ovals (this one was 78% in depth), so they don't face up as large as other ovals. The cushion surface area was about 11% larger than the oval, and what I saw them in person, the cushion did seem larger and I wished that the oval was a bit bigger--but in pictures you can't tell as easily for some reason--the oval appears larger in photos than it does in real life! The Oval would leave me a healthy budget for a setting, and I was thinking of having CVB make something similar to her Acacia setting, or going for a three stone style with half moons or crescents, or maybe something with french cuts.
I was instantly drawn to the cushion. The way that it reflected the colors around it-- it was just very special! The color didn't bother me when looking at the ring on its own, though there was an obvious difference when you placed it next to the oval. It does face up very white. I loved the almost square proportions and the dimensions of the cushion. It seemed to sit well on my finger. I would set this in an antique style setting and I would LOVE something by CVB, but this diamond is near the top of my price range and wouldn't leave me a budget for a CVB setting. Jon would work with me to custom make something not too complicated but still vintage inspired-- likely similar to this singletone setting but with a different basket:

I walked away after meeting Jon thinking that the cushion would be the winner (which was surprising since I went in looking for an oval), but after looking at the photos, I am not so sure. The oval looks so amazing in the photos!! I really don't know what to do. How do people make these decisions!?!? I would love any advice on what you think looks best on my finger and also how to go about this process! This is not the oval that I would purchase, which makes the decision that much harder since I can't compare the actual oval to the cushion.
OK on to my crappy cell phone photos!!
Here we have all three diamonds.
When I upload photos, the quality goes down significantly-- not sure why they look so fuzzy. I will try to attach more photos in a separate post to see if that helps...
