Hi everyone, I just got in this 2.01 ct G Asscher cut diamond. I have seen enough posts on here to see that Karl K is the step-cut specialist. Hoping to get opinions on if it's a keeper and what I should look for. From what I can tell, looks really good to me. What is the usual cost on a stone like this? Thoughts on medium blue in a G? Will I definitely see the effects of medium blue on this stone or will it just enhance it? Thanks!

You have to post magnified photos of it for Karl or anyone to really give you advice. The numbers on the report give very limited information. It works somewhat with rounds, but not with any other shape, other than we could tell you if a stone was way too deep or had a huge table or something.

Hi, thanks for the response. I was working on photos. I know my camera isn't the best at close ups so I also uploaded a video. I was just wondering what advice people would give to evaluate it, besides bringing it in all different kinds of lighting. How can I know if there is any light leakage etc.

FWIW, I think if you do not reveal which vendor is selling it Karl can say more than if you do reveal the vendor's name.

Howdy :}
I am limited in what I can say by trade rules on PS.
I can't see the video it says it is private.
The camera is too close to the diamond in the picture and blocking too much light.
Take the picture with the camera further away then crop the picture if needed to get a batter view of the diamond in a smaller image.

med blue florescence properly graded shouldn't have any great effect one way or another.

You can use the PS search to get comps for pricing but pricing is rather tricky because often the best looking ones are more expensive but sometimes a dud will be the most expensive and a great one the cheapest.
Looking at comps will give you a wide range usually.
Compare policies and services when comparing prices. Buy back, upgrade and return polities can add or subtract value from a sale.

That said I am not seeing anything that says run away so far.

Kenny, do you still have your octavia? Am I missing it or GOG doesn't have them anymore. thoughts on octavia vs square emerald cut? I appreciate your post displaying the two

Is the diamond inscribed? Can you verify the number matches the report?
How does the brightness in the dark areas of the diamond in the photo look to you in person?
Do you have a return period?

I now see that octavia has been mentioned so I have to bow out.
They are still available and can be custom cut if Yoram can find rough in any size over 1ct.

An aset image would really help to settle some of the questions.
To be honest the video raised more questions than it answered.
I will be monitoring this thread from time to time but am limited in what I can post.
However you have some awesome pro-sumers helping you and they are a great help.

I agree with Karl. That video was a question raiser.

The table looks larger than 60%. It could be an optical illusion. So I would check the lab report against the inscription. The depth looks right so, again, could be an optical illusion.
The stone has a fairly flat crown.
The steps and windmills are nicely spaced.
And it doesn't have a P3 issue at all.
But the facets around the table are not looking like they reflect light very well, so I am concerned if they are leaking and how badly. An ASET would show that. So again, if you can get one, that would be best. It's really hard to make a call either way, at this point, without an ASET, or an in person evaluation.

I do have an aset but it is not the easiest thing to get a photo through it. The aset looks good, really good. Mostly bright reds to the edges, greens and some blues. I do see that the stone is inscribed but I can't make it out with the tiny aset scope. I'll have to bring it to a local jeweler to verify it matches the report. It comes with standard 30 day return period, as well as the lifetime upgrade if over double the original amount. From the cutter report the crown height is 12.6%, table is 61.5% which GIA rated a 61. What is a P3 issue? Thanks

Look up "P3 asscher pricescope" and see what comes up. Karl has written articles on it. Basically it's how the facets at the base of the stone, around the culet, perform. Many asschers have P3 issues because they are cut for weight retention. The good news is that yours doesn't have that issue.

I know taking a picture of the ASET scope is hard. My local jeweler helped me take one.

Holy cow, that was hard! But these photos should help...I'd say this aset is accurate to when I look through it myself NOT trying to take a picture lol. This is what I meant by lots of bright reds and some green, blues in the center. Thoughts and thanks!

Okay. That's fantastic.

If those facets right at the table stay lit and do not flash to "off" too much, then you have a clear winner and what we saw was largely due to photography. Are you holding the stone head on and straight though? It looks like it's at an angle.

I like it. I like the table size and would like it even better if the crown were higher. But it isn't bad. Great asschers are rare, but I think this one may be worth keeping.

Thanks for all the helpful opinions. I'd also prefer a higher crown, just personal preference but I think this stone performs well despite the crown height. It doesn't seem to go dark anywhere when I inspect it in different lighting, and the aset didn't show light leakage, if anything blues around the outer center. I have 2 more videos which I hope will help you guys get a better idea.

I think it looks good. You are the one seeing it and could tell if you had a lot of dead area from leakage, and it looks like it doesn't from what I can see.

Re the Octavia's, Dancing Fire posted the other week about there being only 3 Octavia's and I went to look for them out of interest.
I see they are just listed as Asscher's but when you open the AGS report it says on it if they are Octavia. Ofcourse you can always
ask Jon at Good Old Gold too if you are interested in getting one which has not been cut yet.

I know nothing about asscher cuts but the table does look big compared to what is usually recommended on here in your new videos. There is no leakage I can see and it still looks nice. Can you shine the light reflecting off the table in a photo then maybe some of the experts can see the size of the table better and comment. I think a smaller table would mean more colored light reflections.

Edited to add, in the asset pictures the table does not look big, think it must be the crown height which is giving that
illusion.

I think you may be right about the crown height giving the illusion of the larger table. I like a smaller table which is why I went for this at 61%. Here's the photo you requested. Also, I had the inscription checked by a jeweler today...they even had a hard time reading the inscription under 20-30x but it lines up.

I think it looks good. We recommend a minimum of 10% crown height, so you are good there.

Yes, I and my partner both wear Octavias and love the heck out of them.

I used to have a 2.26 ct asscher that had fantastic cut.
I loved that too though it was a totally different look.
The generic has more of a still and peaceful vibe, while the Octavia is more of a fireworks show ... both lovely but very different.
I think of the generic as more of an introvert (in a good way) and the Octavia as an extrovert.
I also have a couple rounds of top cut so I got spoiled by that level of light performance.
The Octavia delivers light performance that blows your eyes out of their sockets yet still sports the handsome stop-sign shape I love.

Additionally with its very very high crown and small table the Octavia continues to deliver astonishing light performance amazingly far off axis.
Even the best rounds can't compare off axis ... and off axis is how we usually see our diamonds.

Unfortunately GOG changed their website so the Octavias are harder to find now.
First search for asscher.
Then view each one and click on the lab report.
Look for the word Octavia in the notes of the report.

Octavia cost more per carat than a generic asscher, but is totally worth it.
The unique proportions/shape/facet angles that precision-control the light make it hard to find suitable rough and they require lots of extra precision fussing over by the master cutter Yoram, aka DiaGem here on PS.

I wish Karl would hook up with an investor to market the Octavia.
It's a tragedy that only a couple dozen have been cut.
The Octavia should be available at zillions of locations.
It's disappointing they are even harder to find now on the only website that sells them (to my knowledge).

When doing the search on GOG, you have to click on BRAND and then Signature Asscher and the Octavias are mixed in there.

I have told Jon they absolutely have to have a way to pull up all stones of a certain type on one page like they used to have. If people can't find the stones, they aren't going to sell!

What type of Asscher cut is this, I have never seen an ASET like that with an Asscher .. Where was the stone cut ?
