I have an old catalog from 1977; the company sold everything including fine diamond rings. Here are some photos and prices from WAY back then 9E037885-BB0D-4FCA-BF9F-B9B1F257D626.jpeg EE1E6E8F-A830-4915-9A9F-CA386C40F16E.jpeg 6DBF5077-9D15-48CE-86FA-ED7073E03909.jpeg 6DBF5077-9D15-48CE-86FA-ED7073E03909.jpeg 9519B7EF-B29E-4F73-8E47-EEA55B2F4F43.jpeg 9E037885-BB0D-4FCA-BF9F-B9B1F257D626.jpeg

Everyone I know at that time had a simple solitaire and wedding band. Yellow gold was the most popular at that time. Most of my friends had rounds, but I did have one friend with an oval. I actually had a wedding band custom made with diamonds going across the top way before that was a common thing!

Yes, I was married with a 4mm wedding band and solitaire too in 1977. DS is correct - almost everyone had the same thing. My engagement ring was a .78 and was much larger than most of my friends at the time.

Too bad we couldn't go back to one day of those prices - lol!

No mention of color, clarity, cut anywhere, only carat.:P2

If I remember correctly, when my ex husband bought my 1/2 carat diamond in 1978, they had stones from $700-2500, the latter being d color, IF. There was never any mention otherwise of color or clarity. I think people were not as educated back then about diamonds.

I love this!
Back then, I used to pore over all the jewelry catalogs, and I wanted everything!

Love it! We got married in 1980 and my ring was a "wrap" ring!

Wrap rings will always be cool (I think Cartier Ruban) as will solitaries be ( I think Tiffany).. LOL

Thank you so much for sharing this! I think this era of jewelry is totally underrated and I'd love to see a comeback! My mom's wedding set from 1970 is sooo similar to several of these sets!

Thanks for posting! That was the year my parents were married! My mom’s ring was lost decades ago but the wedding band ‘hooked’ around the ER much like these designs. Never knew my mom was so trendy! ;-)

OMG same here!! My parents were married in 1970 and my mom's ring (.70 round in white gold, with a brushed texture flat shank like several of the rings in Rockcollector's photo) was also paired with a matching band with a tiny diamond motif that hooked around the ER. Sadly, I lost the matching wedding band and am now awaiting a recreated version of it from David Klass, due next week!

It looks like the Bennet Brothers catalogue. I used to pour over that thing and visit the showroom for jewelry clearance. They did a lot of corporate gifts as well as you could redeem points for everything from a vacuum cleaner to golf clubs. My mom bought a few gold charms there and my dad saved the pages and receipts for insurance purposes.

I love these!! Thank you, @Rockcollector !!! Some of them scream 1970s to me but others could be straight out of a showroom today! You can also see some foreshadowing of 1980s style, too. :)

Factoring inflation those prices are pretty hefty. $100 1977 dollars is a little over $400 today.

I like a bunch of those styles. It all went south in the 80s, IMO.

B9665A56-016E-4D81-A1D2-B632F9F8B128.jpeg This is almost my 1979 engagement ring with brushed gold and a round diamond .37 . Hubby paid $365 for the ring and matching band.

Huh... does that mean the value of engagement rings have gone down, accounting for inflation? I remember looking at a newspaper for cars. They were averaging 3000 bucks. Or is this just a very high priced vendor?

I agree that for that time period the prices are steep. It’s probably marketed with the ridiculously high price..and then always has a sale of 50% off or something like that..

Within my circle of gf's in the early 70's - several became engaged with1/4 ct rounds set in classic Tiffany settings - from Tiffany's. $495 plus sales tax. They just had to have their er's from Tiffany's!

My mother's er from 1953 was $850! I still have the cancelled check. 1 ct round D, IF up to 44x. platinum fishtail 14k band. The diamond and setting were purchased from a diamond cutter who had opened up a small jewelry store in Massachusetts following his immigration to the US from Holland after the war. It was an unusual round cut for the time and up until the August Vintage round - I'd never seen another round so similar.
